When you think of sex furniture, your brain might automatically picture some dungeon-esque situation out of Fifty Shades of Grey. You might also wonder why such a thing exists when you could just smash on any ’ole piece of furniture in your space. The reality is a little more woo-woo (and hygienic) than that. We spoke with Melanie Rose, the host, designer, and consulting producer of Netflix’s new show How To Build A Sex Room, who gave us all the sultry intel about adding sex furniture into your home and sex life.

When you implement furniture that’s built for sex into your space, whether you know it or not, you’re creating a sanctuary for intimacy. What’s more, it’s a whole lot easier to clean, erm, moisture, out of sex furniture than out of your $1,000 velvet couch.

“Most of the time, we only see intimacy happening in the bedroom,” Rose tells SELF. “Sometimes it’s better to have a dedicated space because that’s where you can act out your sexual fantasies and desires. And a space dedicated to that, I think, is a lot more arousing and erotic.”

What should you look for when shopping for sex furniture?

The best sex furniture helps you and your partner(s) explore your fantasies in a safe and clean way. You’ll want to look for materials like PVC, vinyl, or polyester, as each are easy to clean. For items like sex pillows, sex wedges, and ramps, make sure they have a washable cover. For a hanging piece of sex furniture like a swing or sex sling, Rose says to ensure that you have the right anchors for your ceiling, take note of the weight capacity, and buy the right carabiners for the gear. If you don’t have a dedicated sex room (hello, studio apartment dwellers), versatility is key. You might also want items that are easy to stow away. Above all else, make sure whatever you buy is high-quality. Rose recommends going to a boutique sex shop if you need extra guidance.

Below, we dive into different categories of sex furniture, including everything from pillows to sex chairs and versatile massage benches. You’ll also find all-inclusive sex machines and absorbent sex blankets. “It’s only sex—don’t take it too seriously,” she says. “There’s so much pleasure out there to be had. Don’t feel intimidated, don’t be ashamed about it. Talk about it with your partner, and most of all, enjoy.” Now gather your blindfold, favorite vibrator, and flogger, because we’re going shopping—and it might get a little kinky.

Sex Pillows

If it’s your first time considering sex furniture, start small with sex positioning pillows. “Wedge pillows, ramps, and mounts are all positioning aids that are designed to make sex more comfortable and more pleasurable by providing support and positioning for different parts of our bodies,” Jenn Mason, founder and owner of WinkWink Boutique, previously told SELF. “These aids provide a firm base so that it’s easier to reach and be in positions during sex.” Foam pillows are firm and durable, and they have removable covers that you can toss in the wash, while inflatable pillows are ideal for travel and easy to stow away when not in use.
