Maintaining consistent self-love is always key and one fun way to boost confidence and self-love is browsing Valentine’s Day lingerie. A few piece from the best lingerie brands can be a part of your self-love practice. While we highly encourage relaxing in a cozy set of pajamas or indulging in gourmet (or discounted) chocolate gifts this Valentine’s Day, this is also a golden opportunity to elevate your go-to “base layers,” so to speak. Sure, a comfy T-shirt, or your favorite bra and cotton undies are super versatile, but there’s something that feels entirely different and exciting about slipping on a slinky silk bralette or lace corset.
For those unsure about whether to purchase a bodysuit or bralette, or who are totally new to the world of lingerie, we spoke with Cora Harrington, founder and editor in chief of The Lingerie Addict, for a few expert tips.
What should you look for in high-quality Valentine’s Day lingerie?
“I’m looking for fine materials like French lace, Swiss embroidery, and real silk,” Harrington tells SELF. “I’m not necessarily expecting to see all three of those in one garment, but those are signals of excellent lingerie for me. Smaller stitches are more secure as well as more aesthetically pleasing (as they allow for fine detail work), but they also take more time to do and therefore result in more expense. I’m also expecting unique design. Does the brand make something I can’t find from someone else? Or does it look like everything that’s already on the market? Excellent lingerie should be special.”

Above all, Harrington says, look for the lingerie that’s going to make you feel sexy. “There’s this idea that lingerie should be “sexy,” that it doesn’t count unless it’s bustiers and garter belts and sheer lace teddies, but the world of lingerie is expansive,” says Harrington. “Yes, it includes those traditionally sexy pieces, but it also includes loungewear. Pajamas and caftans are as much lingerie as corsets and cupless bras. Don’t feel like you have to adhere to someone else’s aesthetic or concept of beauty. Buy what you love.”
