Danny Jordan is a television producer and father of a child with an upper limb difference. Since there aren’t many children’s books out there that are inclusive, he decided to publish one himself.

That’s when “The Capables” were born. The Capables are a group of super-capable kid superheroes, all of whom have a super capability or “cape.” Each one of their superpowers is activated through empowerment, which can come in the form of accessibility, advocacy, representation, inclusion, or equality.

The Capable’s overcome challenging experiences using these superpowers, whether it’s the first day of school or a trip to the dentist.

Each story in the series aims to represent disability in an accurate and responsible manner. One of those stories is titled “Rae’s First Day.”

“The first time I read ‘Rae’s First Day’ to my son I cried,” Nicole Brennan, founder of IAMPOSSIBLE Foundation, said. “The affirmations scene really got me. If only I had felt that empowered as a child with a limb difference and seen myself represented in books and TV maybe my journey to self acceptance and love would have been smoother.”

Jordan wanted his daughter, Emerson, to grow up seeing herself represented in books, and now she has her very own series.

“I created The Capables to put children like my daughter in the hero role while encouraging readers to be more inclusive and understanding when it comes to disability,” Jordan wrote.
