Rachel Tomlinson Biography
Who is Rachel Tomlinson?
Rachel Tomlinson, principal at Barrowford Primary School, said she made the decision to educate children about the environmental impact of eating animals and help “stop climate change”.
The rule was introduced last year, but angry parents weren’t informed until the school sent a letter on Thursday.
It comes after the controversial Mrs Tomlinson previously banned teachers at the school from raising their voices and believes there is no such thing as a “naughty” child.
And in a letter to students in 2014, she told them not to worry about exam results, as “they don’t always assess everything that makes each one of you special and unique.”
Ofsted subsequently rated the school “inadequate” in 2015, the lowest possible rating from inspectors, just three years after it had received a “good” rating.
Ms Tomlinson received widespread criticism for her approach
Ms Tomlinson received widespread criticism for her approach, which removed all punishments for student misbehavior, with parents and campaign groups calling for her resignation and blaming her for the school’s decline.
Breaking the traditional rule book, she eliminated the normal fixed times for recess and lunch, allowing students to decide when they wanted to eat or have a break in the classroom.
Instead of getting angry with students, teachers are also encouraged to say that a child has “emptied my resilience bucket” before sending them to the “parenting room” if their behavior gets out of hand.
The school’s relationship management policy also currently says that staff should “use anger onions to support behavior regulation,” an exercise coined by family therapist and author Judy Bartkowiak.
Barrowford reinstated her rating to ‘good’ in 2016 after ‘the director and senior leaders embarked on a rigorous journey of improvement’.
Family
The children, ages four to 11, were previously encouraged to resolve any disputes between them by talking about their feelings using New Age-style phrases.
House points, stickers, and certificates were also removed so students learn “because it’s the right thing to do,” not to receive a reward.
He also said the school treats a student’s wrong choice or misbehavior as “a teachable moment”, before admitting that parents at the school “sometimes have a hard time” understanding his policy.
The school’s current relationship management policy adds: ‘A child should not be defined as naughty. It should be explained to the child that he has made a wrong choice.

‘You must link your rationalization about the situation to the behavioral actions and not to the child, e.g. I don’t like the decisions you just made, you’re better than that.’
In a prospectus video, students say the school is ‘different and unique’ and that they have areas to go to ‘if we sometimes make wrong decisions’.
The principal has now upset parents by banning meat from children’s lunch boxes and the school canteen.
Zoe Douglas told The Sun that the meatless rule was “a joke”.
She said: ‘I think they forget that non-meat eaters and vegans have to take a lot of supplements.
‘What supplements do they receive in exchange at that school? Nothing, probably saving on food costs.’
Another parent, who wishes to remain anonymous, said children should not be forced to give up meat.
Tomlinson said:
Tomlinson said: “We made our school lunches meatless to show how each of us, by making a small change in our daily habits, can have a much broader positive impact, and that reducing meat consumption is just one way of do it”.
“We’ve been careful to approach this in a balanced way and teach that it’s okay to eat meat, but reducing our consumption can help our planet.”
When the school was rated ‘inadequate’ in 2015, the parents called for her resignation.
One said: ‘She should quit. You can’t experiment with children’s futures, fail spectacularly, and then keep your job. She should go.
Another, with two children at school, said: ‘I teach my two children right and wrong when they are at home and I feel like the school is undoing my hard work.’
‘If a student misbehaves, they are sent to a relaxation room where they play games on iPads and Xboxes. That’s just encouraging them to be naughty.’
But the school returned to its ‘good’ rating a year later, with inspectors saying ‘senior leaders and governors acted quickly and successfully to eradicate the weaknesses found in the last inspection’.
