Alex Carey Facts

  1. Alex, in his teenage years, had played both Australian rules football and cricket. As he grew older, he had preferred Australian rules football and had represented Glenelg in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) reserves competition when he was 15 years old.
  2. In 2008, he had been selected in South Australia’s squad for the 2008 AFL (Australian Football League) Under 18 Championships but did not play any game. He had then played for South Australia in the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships and had won the SANFL reserves premiership with Glenelg.
  3. He had moved to Sydney in 2010 to join the AFL‘s new expansion club, the Greater Western Sydney Giants, who were participating in the TAC Cup (an under-19 Australian rules football representative competition) to prepare for their entry into the AFL in 2012. He had captained the team to the finals and had won the team’s ‘best and fairest’ award. He had turned out for the team again in 2011 in the North East Australian Football League but was not given a place in their inaugural AFL squad for the 2012 season.
  4. He had then returned to Adelaide and had started playing grade cricket with the Glenelg Cricket Club in the 2012–13 season. He had soon earned a contract with South Australia to play senior domestic cricket. He had started as a specialist batsman but had later moved down the batting order and become a wicket-keeper.
  5. In the 2016–17 season of the Sheffield Shield (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in Australia), he had become just the 4th player in history to have recorded 500 runs with the bat and 50 dismissals as a wicket-keeper in a single season of the tournament. During the final of the tournament, he had recorded his 59th dismissal of the season, a new record for a wicket-keeper in a single season.
  6. At the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, he was Australia’s 4th-highest run-scorer in the tournament (375 runs in 10 matches). With 18 catches, he had also set a new record for the most number of catches by a wicket-keeper in a single edition of the tournament. For his performances, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had included him in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.
  7. In July 2021, he was named Australia’s captain for the first ODI match of their bilateral series against the West Indies as regular captain Aaron Finch was ruled out due to a knee injury. It was the first time that Alex had captained Australia in an international match. Australia went on to win the match by 133 runs and he had also completed 1,000 ODI runs and 50 ODI catches in that match.
  8. He had made his test match debut in December 2021, in the first match of the 2021–22 edition of The Ashes (a biennial test match series played between England and Australia). The debut came in highly unusual circumstances as he had to be fast-tracked to the team after regular wicket-keeper (as well as the captain of the test team) Tim Paine had stepped down from his position just days before the start of the series. Tim had been involved in a scandal after a series of inappropriate texts that he had shared with a female were at risk of being exposed to the public. Alex, in that match, had recorded 8 catches and had set a new record for the most number of catches by a wicket-keeper on test match debut.
