Saurabh Kumar Facts
- Saurabh had first come into the spotlight during the 2017–18 season of the Ranji Trophy (the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in India) where he had ended up as the leading wicket-taker for Uttar Pradesh with 23 dismissals in 4 matches.
- The performance grabbed the attention of scouts around the country and he was acquired by the Rising Pune Supergiants team for the upcoming IPL season for INR 10 lakhs. This was the 2nd and final year for the franchise in the tournament and even though the team had produced a fairytale run to the final, Saurabh had been unable to break into the ‘Playing XI’ in any of the matches.
- In July 2018, he was included in the India Blue squad for the 2018–19 edition of the Duleep Trophy (a domestic first-class cricket competition that was originally contested by teams representing geographical zones of India). He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 19 dismissals in just 3 matches.
- In December 2018, during the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy season, in a match against Haryana, he had scalped 14 wickets for just 65 runs across both innings. These were the 2nd-best match figures ever recorded by a bowler for Uttar Pradesh in the history of the Ranji Trophy.
- He had ended the group stage of the tournament in that season with 50 wickets in just 9 matches and was the leading wicket-taker for Uttar Pradesh. His performances had helped Uttar Pradesh finish the group stage unbeaten (5 wins and 4 draws) and qualify for the quarter-final stage. Saurashtra had defeated them in the quarter-final by chasing down a massive target of 372 runs at the cost of just 4 wickets. This was the highest successful run chase in the history of the Ranji Trophy. Saurabh had managed just 1 wicket in that match across both innings and had finished the tournament with 51 wickets in 10 matches.
- In January 2021, he had been selected as one of the 5 net bowlers to help India’s test match squad prepare for their upcoming bilateral home series against England.
- In February 2022, he was selected in India’s test match squad for their bilateral home series against Sri Lanka. This was the first time that he had been selected in the main squad of an Indian senior national team.
