The prequel series started production in November 2016 after Parsons pitched the idea to the producers of The Big Bang Theory. CBS ordered the series in March of the following year, and Armitage and Perry were cast.
Young Sheldon debuted as a special premiere on September 25, 2017, and was picked up for a full season on November 2, 2017, when it started airing weekly. CBS renewed the sitcom for a 5th, 6th, and 7th season in March 2021. On October 7, 2021, the fifth season premiere.
