A chef and former McDonald’s employee has revealed how you can recreate the fast food outlet’s iconic Quarter Pounder burger at home – and people are so impressed, they said it tastes ‘even better’ than the real deal.
Perth-based Rob Nixon said he has perfected the recipe after much trial and error, putting it to the test against the real thing in an online video called ‘Fast Food vs Homemade’.
To replicate the Quarter Pounder for yourself at home, you’ll only need seven ingredients.

HOMEMADE: Perth-based Rob Nixon said he has perfected the recipe after trial and error, putting it to the test against the real thing in an online video (the homemade version pictured)
The most important thing to do is to meticulously weigh and flatten your ground beef (pictured). Make your burger slightly bigger than your bun for the true McDonald’s effect
After heating a pan to a medium heat, spray with canola oil and cook the patty for two minutes on each side, seasoning with salt and pepper (pictured)
When getting started, the most important thing to do is to meticulously weigh and flatten your ground beef.
‘You want 0.25 of a pound or 113 grams,’ Rob said in his YouTube video.
Once you’ve got the right amount, roll it out, flatten it so that it’s slightly larger than your burger bun and smooth the edges out.
‘Put it into a large pan over a high heat with spray oil,’ Rob said.
Then, simply cook the beef for two minutes on each side.
The correct order for a Quarter Pounder burger heel is the bun, cheese, beef, cheese, pickles and finally onion. Add ketchup and mustard to the crown (both pictured)
In a blind taste test, the judge found that he preferred the homemade version (right) to the real McDonald’s burger (left)
While this is happening, you can toast your sesame seed bun and begin the assembling.

‘Then, on the crown, add tomato ketchup and mustard,’ Rob said.
‘Press down slightly and you’re good to get stuck into that bad boy!’
The devil is in the detail with the Quarter Pounder, so Rob said you’ll want to dig out American cheese slices and make sure your burger is very flat.
The chef’s video has now been viewed more than 44,000 times.
To test how good the homemade Quarter Pounder really was, Rob said he took it along with a real McDonald’s burger to a friend, who blindly tested both burgers.
In comparison to the homemade McDonald’s, judge Brendan said the real deal burger meat tasted slightly like ‘cardboard’.
‘I’d have to say the winner of the Quarter Pounder is this one here on the right,’ Brendan said – gesturing blindly towards the homemade version.
Others online were similarly full of praise for Rob’s creation, writing ‘you should open your own restaurant chain’ and ‘very impressed’ (both Quarter Pounders pictured)

‘Your version looks much better than Maccas!’ one commenter wrote.
Others asked where you can get American sliced cheese in Australia, with Rob responding that stores like Costco sell it.
