Aavishkar Salvi Facts

  1. Aavishkar’s idol growing up was the legendary Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath. With a height and build similar to his idol, he had modeled his bowling run-up and action according to Glenn’s style. This had paid huge dividends as his performances had improved dramatically and he had been fast-tracked up from relative obscurity, first as a backup seamer for his domestic team, and then to the national team within a few years.
  2. In his debut international match for India, an ODI against Bangladesh, he had registered spectacular figures of 7-1-15-2 as India had hammered Bangladesh by a massive margin of 200 runs. He had dismissed both the openers of the Bangladesh team in that match and by that time, their team was tottering at 11/3 and they never managed to recover from that early onslaught. This match was part of a triangular ODI series between India, South Africa, and Bangladesh. The final between India and South Africa was rained out and the match was re-scheduled to a reserve day. That day too, the rain had played spoilsport, and India and South Africa had been forced to share the trophy.
  3. In 2009, the 2nd season of the IPL (Indian Premier League), he and Glenn were both a part of the Delhi Daredevils franchise. This had fulfilled a lifelong dream for Aavishkar as he could not just pick the great main’s brains but also finally live his dream of bowling alongside his hero.
  4. Post-retirement from competitive cricket, he has dabbled in coaching. He had been appointed the head coach of the Puducherry (a union territory in India) team in 2018. With the team having improved under his leadership, the local cricketing administration had extended his stint in 2020 but their plans were hampered by the outbreak of the covid-19 pandemic. In late 2019, he had also been hired as a fast bowling coach for the Oman national cricket team (on an assignment basis).
  5. His first name, Aavishkar, is the Hindi word for invention.
