Conrad Janis, a jazz trombonist, modern art expert, and character actor best remembered for playing Pam Dawber’s watchful, strict father on the comedy “Mork & Mindy,” died March 1 in a Los Angeles hospital. He was 94 years old at the time.
Dean A. Avedon, his business manager, confirmed his death but did not disclose the cause.
Mr. Janis began acting in his early teens and went on to appear on Broadway, radio, film, and hundreds of television shows, including numerous live theatrical plays in the 1950s. He played the protective father of Dawber’s Mindy on “Mork & Mindy” for four seasons beginning in 1978.

Janis was an outspoken supporter of traditional jazz for many years. In 1949, he put together a band of aging jazz greats, including James P. Johnson on piano, Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Edmond Hall on clarinet, Pops Foster on bass, and Baby Dodds on drums, with himself on trombone. He founded the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band in the late 1970s, which made many appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and played eight sold-out Carnegie Hall performances.
