Adele reveals she has given up alcohol in a bid to protect her voice after suffering from ‘hanxiety’

Adele revealed she has given up alcohol in a bid to protect her powerful voice during a surprise Instagram live stream on Saturday.

The singer, 33, revealed she’s had to give up her favourite tipple, an Aperol spritz, because she’s ‘gearing up’ for her return to music with her long-awaited comeback single Easy On Me.

Speaking on the stream, she said: ‘Aperol spritz, I love that. Although ‘cos I’m gearing up to come back I’m having to cut out my drinking.’

It comes just days after Adele told US Vogue that she suffered from ‘hanxiety’ after drinking a little more than usual during lockdown.

‘I’m always a bit hungover on Monday morning. It got earlier and earlier, the drinking,’ she began.

‘I was falling out the back door of the bar rather than falling out of the front. Then I remember I woke up with the worst hangover.

‘Hangxiety, I call it. ‘Who did I talk to? What did I do? It was a month of me going crazy.’

Keep it casual like Adele in an oversized tee by Off-White

We’re still swooning over the outfits Adele modelled in the November issue of both British and American Vogue magazine.

Vivienne Westwood, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Balenciaga… you name it, she wore it.

But for her hilarious Instagram live over the weekend the superstar singer kept things much more casual, wearing this oversized T-shirt, which is by Off-White. There’s only a little brand name print on the front, but on the back is the signature arrow motif. Love!

It isn’t the first time Adele has had to be careful of maintaining her distinctive voice, having undergone surgery on her vocal cords back in 2011.

She was forced to cancel a string of tour dates and promotional appearances after losing her voice.

A spokesman at the Massachusetts General Hospital said she underwent vocal chord microsurgery to stop recurrent bleeding from a benign polyp.

The condition is usually the result of unstable blood vessels in the vocal cord that can rupture.

On having to cancel her tour, Adele said at the time: ‘If I continue to pick up everything before I have properly conquered these problems and nipped them in the bud, I will be totally and utterly f*****.

‘Singing is literally my life, it’s my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job.’

Elsewhere in Saturday’s impromptu Q&A, the Skyfall hitmaker sent fans into meltdown as she played a clip of her upcoming single Easy On Me.

After admitting she would get into trouble by her management, she pressed play on the track in which she likened her emotions to a river.

It comes after she unveiled her long-awaited new music on Tuesday, taking to Twitter to reveal the track is set for release on 15 October.

As her followers flooded the comments’ section with questions about her upcoming album, rumoured to be titled 30, she revealed the project will be inspired by her divorce from former husband Simon Konecki, 47, earlier this year.

In its lyrics, she sang, ‘There ain’t no gold in this river that I’ve been washing my hands in forever.

‘I know there is hope in these waters but I can’t bring myself to swim when I am drowning in the silence, baby let me in…’

The vocal powerhouse also opened up about her mental health during the candid chat, revealing she takes it on a ‘day-by-day’ basis but feels it is ‘very good’ currently.

‘My mental health is very good at the moment. I take it day-by-day and I address whatever comes my way,’ she admitted.

‘It definitely helps me feel better if I take my time. Writing my music… yeah it’s been really therapeutic for sure.

‘I think I lost the appreciation for that. I got things out that I didn’t want to say out loud and talk about,’ the Hello hitmaker added.

‘What’s my next album going to be based on? Divorce, babe, divorce,’ the Tottenham-raised beauty quipped.
