Your feet work up a sweat every time you take a rigorous spin class, head out for a run, or simply stroll about town in sneakers. A good pair of socks—ones that are breathable and moisture-wicking—can help alleviate some of the discomfort that comes from walking around with damp toes.

But it’s about more than just comfort: “Microorganisms such as odor-causing bacteria and fungal organisms that can result in athlete’s foot and fungal nails grow in moist environments,” Miguel Cunha, DPM, a sport podiatrist and the founder of Gotham Footcare in New York City, tells SELF. “These microorganisms can lead to infections that change the appearance and smell of the foot.” In short: Having dry feet can be very important for your health, so we spoke with podiatrists to help you choose the best socks to mitigate sweat.

What type of socks are best for sweaty feet?

In order for a sock to be breathable, it shouldn’t contain cotton because it’ll absorb the moisture from your feet and leave you with a wet sock, Jay Spector, DPM, an Atlanta-based sport podiatrist and former president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, tells SELF. Instead, you want to look for ones made from merino wool or synthetic materials, such as polyester or nylon. These materials help wick moisture away so it can evaporate, leaving your feet drier and cooler.
