Ed Sheeran, 30, recently admitted his weight ballooned to 15 stone after his latest tour ended. The pop star explained his diet consisted of alcohol and fried food, with lots of late nights. In a bid to lose weight and get healthy, Ed shed a whopping five stone by cutting a few things out of his diet. 

Ed, who married Cherry Seaborn in 2019, said becoming a father made him realise he needed to change his lifestyle and prioritise his health. 

He revealed the “penny dropped” when “Cherry was pregnant”. 

Ed said his daughter Lyra – who was born August 2020 – was the “biggest motivation” for him to “detox his life”. 

The Grammy-award-winning singer said excess and hard partying put him in “dangerous” situations, and the loneliness of being on tour led him to drinking alone.

And when he returned home and took time off from the industry, Ed revealed he started binge eating.

“Taking time off and not being on tour was the worst thing for my health,” he explained, adding he would drink alcohol “every single day”. 

The standard glass of wine contains as many calories as a piece of chocolate, and a pint of lager has about the same number of calories as a packet of crisps. 

Drinking just four bottles of wine a month adds up to a yearly consumption of around 27,000 calories, according to the NHS. 

But Ed had a reason to overhaul his lifestyle.

“Since becoming a dad” Ed leads a “clean” lifestyle and occasionally has a drink but doesn’t “drink two bottles” of wine like he used to.  

He said he doesn’t ever want to “quit” any foods or drinks because he feels he would “end up starting to try and binge it again”, The Sun published. 

Alcohol can have a wide range of adverse effects on almost every part of your body, including your brain, bones and heart, the NHS explains. 

From dehydration to feeling the need to snack and interfering with sleeping rhythms; alcohol can have a lot of short term effects. 

Long term, alcohol can increase ones weight, contribute to a range of organ diseases and impact mental health. 

Binge eating, on the other hand, involves regularly eating a lot of food over a short period of time until you’re uncomfortably full. 

The type of food people binge eat on is usually the unhealthy, fast-food kind.
