Former Princess Tessy of Luxembourg revealed that she lost ‘98% of her friends’ in her divorce – which left her unable to ‘walk or speak.’

The ex-royal, 34, who lives in London and spent much of lockdown with her two sons Prince Gabriel of Nassau, 14, and Prince Noah of Nassau, 12, also discussed her research into psychedelic medicine and battling depression in public on the #TellItLikeItIs podcast with Cassandra Rae.

‘When the divorce broke out, when it became public, my body just shut down – literally,’ explained Tessy, who is doing a PHD in medicine. ‘I couldn’t walk, properly speak, eat, sleep. I was a prisoner.’

‘For me, I really had to build myself up again one day at a time. It was really hard. I learned you could not fix that with pills, so I never took any pills like anti-depressants or stuff…I had so much anxiety, I couldn’t go shopping for food.’

Born a commoner, Tessy joined the Luxembourg Army in 2002 at the age of 18, rising to the rank of corporal. Two years later, when she was one of a handful of female UN peacekeepers in Kosovo, she met Prince Louis, who was visiting the army

She added: ‘Divorce was one of the most painful things I have gone through. I lost 98% of my friends.’

The former royal also went on to explain how she still experiences micro-burnouts today.

‘I had them and I keep having them as well,’ she said. ‘It’s just self-care – you want to do better, meditate more and be more self-aware, but life still happens.

‘There’s a lot asked from you and I have a lot of responsibility and I don’t want to disappoint. And I’m also very ambitious.’

Speaking of her ‘big burnout,’ Tessy continued: ‘I think that was a combination of work, perception, pressure, outside pressure, and my divorce.

‘I think it was mostly the divorce because as the ambitious woman that I am and an entrepreneur and all of these other things, it’s hard to admit defeat and failure.

‘It’s part of the journey of every entrepreneur and human being, but for me, it’s one of my weaknesses. I don’t like to fail.’

The humanitarian and activist went on to discuss her keen interest in the study of psychedelics – particularly its use for post-traumatic stress disorder.

‘I saw my psychiatrist at the beginning of my burnout because I just thought, “Oh my god I’m going crazy, I just can’t be in a room with people anymore.”

‘I’m a very sociable human being but was kind of like a prisoner in my head at the time. I didn’t know who to ask for help.

‘So I thought psychedelics – how can that replace some of the psychological feels we’re having?’

Tessy went on to say she thinks we need to ‘step away’ from the stereotype of ‘these are drugs.’

‘I have never taken drugs recreationally,’ she explained. ‘I have tried a joint when I was young – who hasn’t? I’ve never had the slight idea or even desire to try cocaine or anything like that. The pure thought of it scares me but the psychedelics part and the research….

‘It doesn’t have that stereotype anymore. It really heals people. It really gives an incredibly fast alternative to PTSD treatment.’

During the podcast, Tessy, who has just launched her new clothing line Human Highness, also went on to discuss people wanting her to work for free.

‘I get that all the time,’ she explained. ‘I said “no.” I choose the projects I work on for free and right now, the projects I work on for free are fully booked.

‘I’m the UN ambassador of my own charity, I’m patron here, I’m ambassador to my own nine charities now, and I’m a trustee to four.

‘I said, “I just don’t have any spare time for that” – and you can’t just give if you don’t always get something back.’

Tessy of Luxembourg wed Louis in 2006, and has two children Prince Gabriel of Nassau and Prince Noah of Nassau with the Prince, who is the third son of the country’s reigning monarch Grand Duke Henri.

The former Princess, who lost her title after divorcing Louis last April, is said to have maintained a close relationship with ex husband Louis, 34.

The couple’s fairytale marriage broke down in 2016, and they were granted a decree nisi in February 2017, after 12 years together.

They were only 20 when they wed in 2006, getting married six months after the birth of their eldest son Prince Gabriel of Nassau.

Prince Louis, who will now pay £8,000 a year child support, renounced his succession rights to the throne in 2006, a month after marrying Tessy – who was not born of royal blood – but to a modest family in the small town of Niederkorn.

At a hearing in December, Louis was ordered to pay just £75-a-week to each of his two sons after a judge found his family’s vast wealth could not be factored into a divorce battle with his ex-wife.

Louis now lives in Paris, while Tessy juggles a busy work life with raising the couple’s two children across the Channel.

She also works as a consultant, public speaker and is a UN Association patron.
