A doctor has outlined two key symptoms of genital psoriasis to spot. Dr James O’Donovan, a doctor based in the UK, warned that the condition is “more common than you think”.

Psoriasis affects around one in 100 people in the UK, according to the NHS.

While this skin condition usually appears in areas like your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, it could also strike on your genitals.

The doctor took to his YouTube channel to explain how to spot and treat psoriasis in this area.

1. Texture

The first red flag that can give psoriasis away is the texture of your skin.

Dr O’Donovan said: “Psoriasis… causes flaky patches of skin which form scales.”

According to the NHS, some people find their psoriasis causes itching or soreness.

2. Colour

Another warning sign that can help identify the skin condition is the colour of the patches and scales.

The doctor said: “On all skin types, the patches can look pink or red and the scales can look white or silvery.

“On brown or black skin, the patches can also look purple or dark brown and the scales may look grey.”

The good news is that the correct treatment can reduce symptoms or even clear psoriasis over time.

Dr O’Donovan urged people with symptoms of genital psoriasis to come forward to their doctors as this type of the skin condition may need a different treatment than you usually use.

He said: “It’s really important to tell your dermatologist about genital psoriasis because the skin in this area is thin and sensitive, so you’ll likely need a different treatment plan and possibly different medicine.”

The medical expert added that many people, including children, can experience a “flare” in this area.

Dr O’Donovan said: “So it’s important you don’t get embarrassed or ashamed about this. And you should tell your doctor if you have psoriasis on or around your genitals.”

Your treatment will depend on severity and the exact location of your psoriasis, but steroid creams are often the go-to. Other medicines include mild coal tar, ointments and more.

“The important thing to remember is that you should follow the instructions on the medicine pack and take it for the time that it is recommended,” the doctor added.
