A gut health doctor wants people to add one food to their shopping list, if it isn’t there already. In a new post on ikTok, Dr. Steven Gundry (@drstevengundry) shared that this nutrient-packed food is one that is common in many kitchens, having become very popular in recent years.
Revealing the food, the medical expert explained: “Avocados have become a trendy health food, but the truth is it’s an incredible superfood for your health.” Urging people to “start incorporating it into your diet today”, he says they can “help you lose weight”.
He explains: “Avocados help you absorb the nutrients in food.” It also boasts “great monousaturated fat and are rich in prebiotic fibres. These compounds actually help you lose weight.”
Sharing how much we should eat per day, he continued: “There is a human study that shows the addition of one avocado a day actually improved weight loss over not having the avocado a day.”
Supporting these claims, a study led by scientists from the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Penn State, USA, was published with Kristina Petersen, associate professor of nutritional sciences and co-author of the study, saying: “We found that participants who consumed one avocado per day significantly increased their adherence to dietary guidelines.
“This suggests that strategies like eating an avocado per day can help people follow dietary guidelines and improve their diet quality.” Just one medium-sized avocado is rich in essential nutrients and supports heart health, thanks to its oleic acid, which offers protective benefits for cardiovascular well-being.
Additionally, avocados are a great source of fibre – providing about 10 grams per fruit—supporting digestion and gut health. They’re so good they even boast an impressive range of vitamins and minerals including:
- vitamin K
- vitamin E
- vitamin C
- several B vitamins – including folate
- potassium – they even surpass bananas in potassium content per serving
- powerful antioxidants like lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene
