“The problem isn’t that we get stressed. The problem is there is no simple way to learn well-being and avoid getting stressed in the first place,” says Dan Lyons Happy Shifting Gym co-founder and CEO, “While the true cost of lost hope, ambitions and potential are inestimable, the most important thing is these are costs which can be avoided.”
More of it is never bad, but less of it is always bad, and it is always a win for people in life and at work. Yet, husband and wife cofounders Dan Lyons and Montse Ventosa set out to answer the question, “If well-being is so essential, why don’t more of us practice it?” That was the germ of the concept of flat-packed bliss. Based on their efforts over the previous 20 years, Happy Shifting Gym has resulted in 500 workplaces and 2 million people.
There is a neurobiological link between flat-packed bliss and happiness. It involves neuroscience, Martin Seligman, the pioneer of positive psychology, and some elephants. Seligman originally believed that stress and sadness stemmed from a condition known as learned helplessness. Because when confronted with huge environmental demands that we cannot meet, we learn to give up. The dorsal raphe nucleus of the
activates, and we experience what Seligman refers to as “learned helplessness.” Consider an elephant that has been tethered by a thin rope its entire life and has forgotten that it can escape as a much stronger adult.
Less well-known is that Seligman went on to discover that the learned helplessness element of his work was only the beginning of the story, not the finish. He proved that hope, the brain’s adversary, may deactivate the learned helplessness section of the brain. The brain’s neurologically short circuits taught helplessness by intentionally practicing hope.

Dan Lyons, cofounder and CEO of Happy Shifting quit Richard Branson’s Virgin at the age of 28 and founded Happy Shifting Gym. He couldn’t have been happier when he first started, but after four years, in a very senior post for his age, and through no fault of his own, Dan was anxious, dissatisfied, and burned out.
While working to reestablish his well-being, Dan reflected on how many individuals and how many other workplaces had similar issues, and the massive waste of hopes and potential that resulted. Dan realized that regaining his well-being was a tedious and tough process and that it would have made far more sense to avoid becoming burnt out in the first place. And this was the “aha!” moment. The issue wasn’t that he was burned out, as awful as that was. But nothing existed to prevent burnout in the first place.
Today, 20 years later, the state of well-being has never been worse. Happy Shifting Gym has opened its waiting list to coincide with World Happiness Day. Individuals and businesses can join the waitlist here.
