Millions of people with hay fever allergies have been urged to start taking antihistamine drugs as soon as possible as high pollen levels are predicted across the UK. Ear, nose and throat consultant Ali Qureishi warned that many people start treatment too late rather than taking preventative action.

The expert, a specialist at Welbeck Health Partners, said: “In the majority of cases, people will start treatment once their hay fever symptoms appear. By which time, it’s too late – you’re fighting a losing battle and will do every year. If you struggle with sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and a blocked nose during hay fever season, you need to build your immunity to pollen particles without delay.

“It might not feel natural given temperatures at night in rural parts of the UK continue to dip below freezing, but this is the most effective way of getting the most out of your summer.”

Daily antihistamine pills or nasal sprays should ideally be started two weeks to a month before symptoms begin, Mr Qureishi said.

He also advised hay fever sufferers to avoid drying clothes outside, to invest in cooling fans and keep windows closed at home, and to wear sunglasses to prevent pollen affecting their eyes.

The expert added: “When we’re exposed to pollen particles, our bodies release immunoglobulin which lead to the release of histamines and other chemicals to protect against the allergen.

“It is these chemicals which cause our noses and throats to become swollen, produce surplus mucus and cause sneezing and itchy eyes.”

Around 13 million people in the UK are thought to experience hay fever.

In severe cases, it can lead to complications like sinusitis, worsening asthma symptoms, and even potentially life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis.
