Whether it’s A&E waiting times, the sharp rise in obese children or cancer treatment waiting lists, there’s plenty to be getting angry about when it comes to the health of the nation.

But what has enraged a former health minister the most, it seems, is a creme egg.

Earlier this week the pizza chain Domino’s announced a new collaboration with Cadbury’s, involving a whole creme egg encased in a chocolate chip cookie.

And while many were excited by the concoction Lord Bethell, who worked in the Department of Health and Social Care during the Covid pandemic, appeared to be seriously offended by the fusion.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, the Tory peer wrote: ‘This is disgusting. A whole Cadbury creme egg inside a Domino’s cookie.

‘These are serious corporate food companies. What are they thinking?

‘The executive team, the board and the shareholders should be ashamed of themselves.

‘It’s not illegal. But it’s harmful. It’ll weigh heavily on their future career prospects. And it’s disgusting.’

He then went on to share photographs of members of Domino’s board of directors, adding: ‘It blows in the face of their noble-sounding corporate responsibility commitments.

‘They should know better. And use their talents to find less egregious ways to make a return.’

While the new concoction will come to around 370 calories – more than your average packet of crisps or chocolate bar – there are readily-available high street drinks and treats boasting much higher calorie counts.

Meanwhile Scotch egg creme eggs have been around for nearly a decade, and deep friend Mars bars are a well-known snack in Scotland.

Lord Bethell’s online followers were quick to point out he was ‘shouting at a cookie’ and that the concoction ‘looks amazing’.

One user responded: 'I'm a doctor and would like to think I'm in pretty good nick. I would absolutely devour that. 'Having a treat like this every so often isn't what damages people's health. The picture is a lot more complex than that'

A spokeswoman for Domino’s said: ‘These special edition cookies bring together two much loved, iconic brands and are designed to be a delicious pre-Easter treat which can be shared.

‘At just over 370 calories per cookie, they are in line with the content of many other treats available on the high street such as frappes and croissants.

‘We know our customers love to share our existing cookies, and we expect they will do the same with the new Creme Egg cookies.’
