Heinz Baked Beans fans are up in arms after the brand introduced a new smaller size tin – but supermarkets haven’t matched the reduction in price.

Customers who purchased the smaller packs online on Tesco and Ocado took to the reviews to bemoan the alteration, with many claiming they felt duped.

Heinz Baked Bean tins are usually 415g, sold for 85p each, but Tesco is now selling a 300g version for 80p.

That means the reduction in size is 28 per cent, yet the change in price is just 18 per cent, so customers are getting a raw deal. Meanwhile Ocado’s are listed as 70p per tin.

While both supermarkets list the new weight on its product pages, and Tesco’s beans feature a red label reading ‘new size’, many shoppers didn’t notice the change and were frustrated by the smaller packs.

One angry customer ranted: ‘Bought not realising these are not the standard size – disappointing. Beware!’

Another wrote: ‘I bought this by mistake thinking it was the normal size and only when I saw it I realised how stupid I had been not to check the details.

‘No wonder they haven’t splashed “great new size” all over the picture. I bet lots of people have been taken in by it.’

Some also believed they were paying the same price, which incensed them further.

One wrote on the Tesco product page: ‘Heinz appear to have done some customer research and reduced the tin size to 300g. Same price though.

‘Now what I would like to know is who would answer “yes please” to the question “who would like to have less beans and pay the same amount?”‘

Ocado customers were also cross, especially as the image on the website doesn’t feature a label indicating the new size – however it does list the correct weight.

One commented: ‘Not happy with this bargain, only 300g.’

Another moaned: ‘This can is more than 25 per cent smaller than a “normal” size can.

‘A regular can is 415g, this is 300g. And it’s a regular price. Big surprise for me – this won’t feed my boys.’

And one wrote: ‘I am glad to see I wasn’t the only one surprised by the size when it arrived, but there it says 300g, just obviously didn’t read it.’

Asda had the clearest labelling, with a large red label indicating the new size, and it is priced at 50p, which is 29 per cent cheaper.

This means you’ll get better value for money if you buy the smaller tins at Asda than you would purchasing the full sized versions.

The smaller size option was welcomed by some shoppers, with one writing: ‘Heinz baked beans in tomato sauce is by far the very best and I’ve just discovered this NEW size!!

‘The 200g is, for me, just quite not enough for me, on toast! The 415g, for one is just a bit to much. BUT the new size 300g is just right!!’

A spokesperson for Heinz said: ‘As well as our ever-popular 150g, 200g and 415g can sizes, Heinz Beanz are also available in a new 300g size.

‘The weight is always very clearly shown on each can label as well as online to ensure fans can pick the size that’s best for them.’
