How Facebook saved one man’s life
Major Depressive Episode. That was what the doctor wrote on my medical record. It was August 10, 2014.
The day before, some friends had pulled me up off the pavement outside the office block where I worked and manhandled me to the nearest hospital crisis centre.
They’d come because I’d put a message on Facebook saying: ‘I need help.’

I was a wreck, a broken man as they say: mute, drunk, tearful and overwhelmed with panic, dread, shame and confusion, barely able to stand, let alone speak.
I’d been deciding on ways to end my life, running though the list of well-known methods. Earlier, I’d written a resignation letter to leave the job I knew was gradually destroying me. I’d started crying and then left the office.
There was an off-licence nearby, so I decided to drink: bottle after bottle. Ending my life would be an end to everything: all the torment and trouble, the need to take decisions and responsibility, the demand to be me. But then an alternative thought came, I don’t know where from. I could ask for help. And so I typed those words into Facebook, adding my phone number and location, then waited a while, wondering whether to post it.
What would people think? Maybe they’d laugh or think I was just seeking attention. Time passed, I don’t know how much.
And then I pressed the ‘post’ button. My phone soon started bleeping, flashing, ringing. Then friends came in a taxi, scraped me up and took me to hospital.
How I ended up at rock bottom
I told the doctor my story, as best I could: I’m Kevin. I’m in my mid-40s, and I’m from a small town in Shropshire. I grew up there with my mum and dad, who were teachers, and my sister.
When I was 20, I started having panic attacks. A doctor diagnosed ‘stress-related depression’ and a psychiatrist wrote down ‘obsessive compulsive disorder’.
I was put on a short course of antidepressants, which ironed out the twists and tangles in my thoughts and feelings.
At 29, my girlfriend and I split up, I found a new job and lost it, started a new relationship that didn’t last, then found a succession of places to live in that I then had to move out of. Between anxiety, depression and panic attacks I went to see a doctor, did a bit of therapy and got put on antidepressants again. I’ve been taking them ever since.
Being gloomy or sorrowful, or fretful and preoccupied, became completely normal: it just seemed to be me.

I was a journalist, working mostly for magazines and newspapers, and my freelance life may have looked carefree and gadabout, but inwardly I felt very lost. I felt like I needed a change, so in 2009 I moved to Berlin.
The job, editing a fashion magazine, was perpetually stressful. On the whole I managed it but I’d also caught glandular fever, which added a layer of misery. I was, not for the first time, drinking too much.
I was in love but the relationship had hit a tough patch, and there were conflicts and arguments I didn’t know how to handle. And I was full of doubt, struggling with what to do and how to be.
The question of why this all amounted to a breakdown, burnout, crisis, whatever you choose to call it, I’ve tried to answer many times since. More than anything, I felt a void. A huge, overwhelming blank nothing. And that is what being a step from suicide looks like.
In the teeth of a crisis, things stop being rational and explainable because this is the process where mental illness, something I’d suffered with for a long time, becomes genuine unreason: a madness.
And it came on fast.
The doctor asked me to promise that I wouldn’t kill myself. So I said the words: ‘I promise.’
From there, the only way was up
The good thing about rock bottom is that, from there, we can only go upwards. Soon after asking for help, when I was back at home trying to make sense of what had happened, I read about a useful mental exercise: if you’re going through a tough patch, imagine yourself five years in the future, returning to your ‘today self’ with a message.
At the time, the best I could wish for was that things would eventually be ‘all right’. Today, I am that five-years-ahead-me… and things really are ‘all right’.
Since my breakdown, I’ve completed qualifications in coaching and mentoring at University College London, and studied Humanistic and Psychodynamic Counselling at Goldsmiths, also in London.
A few days after I was taken to hospital, someone I hadn’t seen for a decade read my Facebook message and wrote to say: ‘From now on Kev, be completely honest and open. Confront it head on. And as you’re a writer, write it all down.’
It turned out his sister had taken her own life – and I followed his advice, which was the first step in what would eventually become my book, Everything Begins With Asking For Help, which is published next week.
It’s about four things: depression, anxiety, breakdown and recovery – what they mean to me, how I’ve navigated them and what I’ve seen and heard that’s worth passing on.
Writing it was part of overcoming the intense shame I felt about being the guy who’d been editor of a glamorous fashion mag, who got scraped up off the pavement and taken to a crisis centre.
Depression, of course, isn’t ‘a man thing’. But it does wound men in a particular, and cruel way. So I hope that men will be able to relate to or identify with some of what I have to say.
My first and most important message to everyone who is struggling is: ask for help. In that critical gazing-into-the-void moment, it could mean the difference between dying and surviving, recovering and moving on. I believe in this message because, of course, it’s what kept me alive. And I also realise how it is hard for many men to do.
Depression happens to ordinary people
There were 5,821 suicides in the UK in 2017 – and three-quarters of them were men. In fact, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 – more than road accidents.
Overall, numbers are falling. But last year 121 boys aged between 15 and 19 took their own life in England and Wales, more than twice the number of young girls. Suicide rates are rising fastest in this age group.
Just last week, a coroner recorded an open verdict at the inquest into the death of Prodigy frontman Keith Flint – the 49-year-old was found hanging at his Essex home on March 4. Actor Robin Williams killed himself aged 63, the very day after I was taken into hospital, and last year we lost chef Anthony Bourdain at 61.

And in recent years, countless high-profile men have spoken out about their own mental health – from Prince Harry and pop singer Gary Barlow to cricket stars Marcus Trescothick and Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff.
But mental illness isn’t just a story in a newspaper; it’s a real, lived thing. It hit me hard when I heard about the death of a man I had met last year. Gareth was 41 and a member of an arts project in the town where I grew up. I met him when I went there to do a talk about my own experiences. A few months later, I read a report in a local newspaper about a man who had gone missing. The accompanying photograph was of Gareth. Days later, his body was found. He had taken his own life.
Gareth was an ‘ordinary’ guy, troubled by mental health problems now so common they are considered ordinary too.
Men are ashamed to be seen as vulnerable
In her 1990 book The Beauty Myth, feminist writer Naomi Wolf argued that women’s lives are subtly governed by the pressure to be beautiful. The same argument could be made about men’s relationship to strength: it’s the marker of a man’s potential in the sexual marketplace, his value at work, his status and his relationship with himself.
A man who feels himself to be weak – physically, intellectually or emotionally – inherits a sense of shame.
It’s a cliche to say men bottle things up, but there is good evidence it’s true. Studies suggest that soldiers suffering severe, life-destroying symptoms of post-traumatic stress – once called shell shock – delay seeking help for ten years on average.

Women are much more willing to talk about their feelings and emotions, which again is backed up by research.
I think men feel ashamed of anything that makes us appear vulnerable, so we hide it at times when we most need to admit it. But this ‘strong and silent’ myth is putting our lives at risk.
There are many other reasons we don’t ask for help. We may be afraid people might laugh, or judge. We worry we’ll appear needy. Maybe we don’t want to bother people, or we want to protect them from the truth. But many men, in particular, don’t ask because we don’t realise there is a problem in the first place.
Dr Luke Sullivan, a psychologist who works in an NHS crisis service in London, talks of ‘the intolerable moment’: a series of stressful events or situations – difficulties at work, an illness, relationship conflicts – which build up and eventually become overwhelming.
Suicide suddenly seems like the only way out.
‘It doesn’t matter whether or not you have depression,’ says Dr Sullivan, who also runs mental health charity Men’s Minds Matter. ‘If you find yourself in emotional distress, and it’s persistent, you will do anything to get out of it.’
I did – like many people I know – have a mental health diagnosis.
But I was surprised to discover, later, that two thirds of people who commit suicide don’t.
I remember thinking all I could do was soldier on. I was at breaking point when I asked for help – and in many ways, it all happened so quickly, I didn’t see it coming.
It’s a story I’ve heard repeatedly: a man takes his own life, and friends or family say they ‘had no idea’ things were so bad.
How to start again? for me it was sawing logs
After my breakdown, I moved back to Shropshire from Berlin, put all my belongings in storage, and moved in with my mum and dad.
I did plenty of walking over the following winter: to the library, to the shops, to fields nearby, along the railway line. Some mornings, bored of walking, I jogged. I got a saw from the garage and began cutting logs I’d collected from a nearby coppice. It gave me a routine, and a realisation that moving my body helped change my mind.
Every day I resolved to do something physical: cut a few more logs, take a longer or slower walk, even do a few press-ups. It is easy to forget you have a body when depressed and anxious thoughts dominate your field of experience.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this routine kick-started a chemical reaction in my body. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain linked to mood, is often at its lowest first thing in the morning, but moving stimulates it.
I speak to my therapist once a week, on Skype as well as in person.
So how do you ask for help?
My advice is this: consider, for a minute, things you might need but are afraid to ask for.
It might be a hug, or some advice on a decision you need to take. Maybe some money to tide you over, a break from work, someone’s attention, or just to be listened to for a while.
If you worry about whether you should ask for help, it probably means it would be a good thing to do.
Ask your GP, or someone you trust – a close friend or relative.
At work, speak to your manager. Or ask someone you know who has experience of mental health problems.
The Samaritans have a 24-hour help line, on 116 123, and CALM also have one that runs from 5pm to midnight, on 0800 58 58 58.
Just say: ‘There’s something I’m struggling with, can I ask your advice?’ Or maybe: ‘I can’t cope and I don’t know why.’
The most simple and honest thing to say of all? ‘I need help.’
During our 50-minute slots I feel my preconceptions – my fixed ideas about ‘happiness’, ‘strength’ and ‘man’, for instance – are challenged and pulled apart. Medication has helped, by removing some of the gloom and putting distance between me and the depths of despair.
These days, I don’t drink (mostly): sobriety is a good match for mental health for me. But neither do I lecture in abstention.
And opening up – to others and myself – has been key. I encourage anyone who feels they need help to start writing their own story: ask yourself, when did you start feeling this way? When did things change?
Some mornings I wake up and feel OK. On others, things seem grey and empty, colourless and hopeless. I feel lonely. But, having sought help from doctors, therapists, and from reading, and talking and learning, I know life is a combination of the things that happen to us, the things we do every day, and all the things we do to get well and stay well.
I can’t make any promises. I can’t say: ‘Follow me, do this and you’re guaranteed to get better.’
But I hope my story will reassure other men who maybe feel, like I did, that recovery is possible.
