Backpacking can be a great activity to get involved in. You get out in nature and have a chance to enjoy all the benefits it has to offer. If you’re just getting started with backpacking and are getting ready for your first trip, there are some things you should do to make sure your first trip, and all future trips, are both safe and fun.
Know Your Routes
Getting lost out in the wilderness is incredibly dangerous. One of the things you can do to help keep you from getting lost is to know the routes you are going to take ahead of time. This is easier than ever now, thanks to satellite images like the ones you can find on Google Maps. It’s also a good idea to get an idea of the difficulty of your intended route and any defining landmarks and features you can use to identify where you are. It might also be helpful to download a hiking app to make sure you know where you’re going.
Pack the Right Supplies
The thing with backpacking is that you have to carry all your supplies with you. This includes your tent, food, water, flashlight, cookware, sleeping bag, clothing, and any emergency supplies you intend to bring. It’s a lot of stuff and the weight can add up quickly. As such, you need to make sure you pack only the essentials and that they are good quality and lightweight. That’s one of the reasons why having an LED flashlight may be a good idea. LED lights have benefits over others lights. This includes their tendency to be brighter, smaller, lighter, and longer lasting. These are all really good qualities for your flashlight to have when you go backpacking.
Don’t Go Alone
If this is your first trip, it’s best not to go alone. Even if you have gone before, it’s still a good idea to go with at least one other person. There is safety in numbers, and more experienced backpackers can be a great help and resource for those with less experience. If you do choose to go alone (though you really, really shouldn’t), it’s imperative that you let someone else know where you’re going and how long you plan to be gone. This way, if you do get lost someone can help direct search and rescue workers to where you are most likely to be, increasing your chances of being found.
As you prepare for your first backpacking trip, it’s important that you take steps to ensure that you will stay safe while you have fun. Before you go, familiarize yourself with your routes. Pack carefully, and go with a friend who already has some backpacking experience. You’ll be on the right track to have a great adventure outdoors.
