Weight can gradually creep up on you during the festive period, which is why many people will be focusing on shifting the extra pounds this month.

Metabolism slows down by age, which means it can take extra work to lose weight as you get older.

Fitness experts at Anytime Fitness – the 24/7 gym available nationwide – have dismantled the difference between fat loss and weight loss.

“When people say they’d like to lose weight, their actual goal is usually fat loss,” the experts noted.

“And one of the most common misconceptions in fitness is that seeing a lower number on the scale means you’re losing fat.”

The weight seen on the scales takes into account your total mass weight, which is made up of bone weight, muscle weight, water levels and fat.

What you see on the scales can change daily depending on what time it is, if you’re bloated, and how hydrated you are.

To lose fat, it’s important to burn off more calories than you consume to create a deficit – this is how you become fitter.

The experts at Fitness First shared a simple tip to help you achieve your weight loss goals: “Set action-based goals rather than result-based goals.”

This means losing 10 pounds by June is a less effective goal than visiting the gym three times a week.

“When you set action-based goals, you’ll be more likely to stick to your weight loss workout plan and see the results you want,” the experts elaborated.

How often should I exercise?

NHS guidelines suggest at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, which can be broken down into half-hour brisk walks every day.

“No matter what your workout routine looks like, the most important thing is to get your body moving regularly,” the experts added.

“The best exercises for weight loss are the ones that you enjoy, so find what works best for you.”

This could be walking the dog, swimming, playing tennis or another sport, rock climbing, yoga, or jogging.

Anytime Fitness offers a four-week weight loss exercise plan for beginners or anybody who would like to shed some extra pounds.

The experts added: “If you’re trying to lose weight, be patient with yourself and focus on the journey — prioritising your health and wellness is a win in itself.”
