Power loss during the winter is a contentious issue in Texas, and sure enough, it happened in various cities again, namely around the Austin area. This has caused many people to point their fingers at Gov. Greg Abbott, whom they hold personally responsible for Texas’s inability to stay powered during the winter.
But the issue isn’t Abbott’s. As the governor himself pointed out, Texas’s independent power grid has enough power to go around. The issue is that people are being forcibly parted from the grid thanks to ice weighing on trees and lines until they collapse, wiping out the power.

Abbott is not responsible for the trees or powerlines in your neighborhood. That’s a task for the local power company to maintain and repair. Regardless, leftists are attempting to put this on Abbott as if this is a repeat of what happened in 2021.
In 2021, the grid failed miserably due to Texas’s lack of readiness for such a hard freeze to hit so suddenly. A combination of a lack of preparedness for the cold, trees collapsing on power lines, and an overtaxed grid that usually didn’t need so much power around that time of the year created a perfect storm of grid failure.
The moment was used to slam Abbott for the upcoming election, and sure enough, it was used in spectacular fashion by Democrats as a campaign point. The truth that no one is talking about is that if Democrats had been in charge when it happened, they wouldn’t have been able to prevent the power outage either. The storm was highly unusual and the Texas grid, built chiefly for resisting heat, suddenly contended with the opposite problem.
Regardless, Abbott pressed forward in making sure it didn’t happen again and according to the graphs, there is readily available power. Moreover, this isn’t like in 2021 when millions of people lost power. Only a very small percentage of people have lost power, and it’s not due to a grid failure, it’s just due to simple bad luck.

This was even mentioned by Austin Energy according to Fox News.
“Ice is bringing down power lines and tree limbs,” said the company on Wednesday. “Crews are facing icy roads & frozen equipment making it difficult to provide estimated restoration times.”
Fox News also reported that the Austin Fire Department has responded to more than 200 incidents of power lines arcing or down on Wednesday.
This would still be happening if Beto had been elected by some dark miracle, but rest assured they still would have been blaming Abbott for a grid problem that Abbott had actually prepared for.
As usual, this is far less dramatic than Democrats are making it out to be, and they are using the misfortune of some as a tool to press a political narrative that isn’t even true.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
