According to Daily Mail, the Shooter spent much of his spare time with his Hispanic best friend from high school and his black girlfriend, watching YouTube videos and playing video games at the friend Matt Casado’s home in Conklin, New York.
According to CNN, Gendron’s parents remained shocked and shattered over the shooting.
During the investigation, Police revealed that he chose Tops because it was in a particular ZIP code in Buffalo with the highest percentage of Black people close enough to where he lived in Conklin, New York.

On November 28, 2022, Payton pleaded guilty to all state charges involving shooting, murder, terrorism, and hate crimes.

Before coming to the crime, Payton had made several posts. A lengthy document written by the gunman revealed he had been planning his attack for months and had visited the Tops supermarket several times.

According to NPR, Payton, the Shooter, was charged on the state level with one count of domestic terrorism in the first degree, ten counts of first-degree murder, and ten counts of second-degree murder as a hate crime.
In addition to those charges, the court imposed three counts of attempted second-degree murder as a hate crime and one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The Shooter faces multiple federal hate crime charges, which carry the potential for the death penalty and several firearms charges.
However, Payton pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. According to the Justice Department, If convicted on all 27 federal charges, he could face the death penalty or the second life sentence in prison without parole.
CNN claims Erie County District Attorney John Flynn described the attack as a racist hate crime and outlined the timeline of the mass killing.
Although Sentencing has been scheduled for February, Attorney Flynn requested Erie County Judge Susan Egan to sentence him to life without parole, for pleading guilty to the first-degree domestic terrorism charge, New York’s highest sentence.
