Death of Julie Van Espen

According to reports, on Saturday, 4 May 2019, in Antwerp, Belgium, 39-year-old Steve Bakelmans noticed a 23-year-old riding her bicycle and decided to rape her. Bakelmans threw Van Espen’s travel permit into one of the complex’s dumpsters. He concealed her bicycle basket in an alley since it didn’t fit in the trash. Later that night, he threw her corpse, along with her bicycle and phone, in the Albert Canal. On May 6, the corpse was discovered in the canal. Van Espen’s clothes were discovered on the grass.

Bakelmans was detained by police in Leuven on the day Van Espen’s corpse was discovered after the CCTV photos were publicized in a public appeal as part of the investigation into Van Espen’s death. He admitted to killing her while in detention.  He had already spent four and a half years in jail for a variety of crimes, including rape, and in 2016, he was detained on suspicion of theft and rape and was eventually sentenced to four years in prison. In November 2018, he filed an appeal, and the matter was postponed indefinitely. After he was detained on suspicion of murdering Van Espen, police and prosecutors revealed that they planned to use Bakelmans’ DNA to determine whether he may be linked to any cold cases.
