MAFS viewers SLAM producers for teaming Jake Edwards with Beck Zemek after depression battle

Married At First Sight fans have lashed out at Channel Nine producers over their decision to pair Jake Edwards with renowned mean girl Beck Zemek on the experiment.

On Thursday, one viewer shared unearthed footage of former AFL star Jake, 32, on a MAFS Facebook fan page, where he was seen discussing his depression and suicide attempt on the network’s current affairs show 60 Minutes in 2017.

The video caused many fans to question why Nine decided to team Jake with ‘the meanest girl in town’ Beck, 27, three years later, after he was so open about his struggles with his mental health in the past.

‘One thing is very clear; why did the MAFS producers think he should be put through this show, and why did they deliberately team him up with the meanest girl in town? I honestly cried my eyes out when I watched this,’ one viewer wrote.

‘Very sad and very mean,’ another fan added. ‘Who is responsible for this show? Only when something happens to a contestant will these producers wake up.’

‘Honestly, the producers of the show would’ve known about this.’ a third chimed in.

‘Totally agree! What they are doing is manipulation of a person to get ratings. Jake should have been the last person to be put with Beck,’ a fourth said.

Others, however, pointed out that MAFS is simply a reality show which doesn’t tie contestants down should they ever want to leave.

‘As sad as it is, everyone should know how ‘produced’ reality TV is. Any of them can leave, they are not in prison,’ another person commented.

‘Producers look for special people to go on the show – everyone has different personality, so different opinions,’ another wrote.

Others pointed out how great it is to see a mental health advocate like Jake on the show, adding: ‘What a great role model Jake is to our young men suffering with mental health issues. An outstanding human being.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Nine for comment.

Beck’s cold attitude towards Jake has often been criticised by fans throughout the season.

Just minutes after meeting him at their wedding, she mocked his appearance to producers and went on to spark a string of arguments with him over the course of the show.

In a scene which saw one viewer describe her as ‘Godzilla’, Beck raged: ‘Why would you turn the light on while I was sleeping?’

Charity CEO Jake, clearly shocked by the accusation, replied: ‘All I did was turn the hallway light on for 20 seconds to get some clothes out.’

His wife bitterly responded: ‘I just feel that’s pretty disrespectful, considering there’s probably a bathroom light you could have used.’

During the heartbreaking interview, he said: ‘I just made a decision – this thing you call life, I just suck at it. I’m failing, my family are consistently worried about me, my mates…I can’t be honest with them. I’m done.’

Jake was luckily saved when he received a phone call from his dad after his failed attempt – who, along with his mum, came to pick him up immediately.

He now goes around the country with his charity, to speak to young men in sports clubs and schools who may be feeling a similar way inside.

‘I have the opportunity at a second chance in life, and I don’t take that for granted,’ he said.
