Mo Farah Facts

  1. Although Mo was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, his family had fled to Gabiley, a city in Somaliland (a de facto state in the Horn of Africa that is internationally considered to be part of Somalia) when he was very young. Although the family was originally from Gabiley, they had been living in Mogadishu as Mo’s father was a businessman there. They had later fled, as refugees, to the neighboring country of Djibouti.
  2. He had been separated from his twin brother Hassan when they were 8 years old. This was when Mo, his mother, and his younger brothers had moved to the United Kingdom to join Mo’s father who had been working and studying there.
  3. Hassan was unwell unable to travel with them. So, he had stayed behind with some relatives in Djibouti. When Mo’s father returned to take Hassan to the UK, the people he was living with had moved and Hassan was nowhere to be found. Mo and his twin ended up being separated for around 12 years.
  4. In the late 1990s, noted philanthropist Eddie Kulukundis had paid the legal fees to complete Mo’s naturalization as a British citizen. This had allowed him to travel to several competitions without visa issues.
  5. Between 2011 and 2017, Mo and his family had lived in Portland, Oregon, so that he could train full-time with the Nike Oregon Project, an elite training program for selected athletes that was created by the American corporation Nike, Inc. The family had returned to London in 2017.
  6. He is an ardent supporter of English soccer giants Arsenal F.C. and has even trained with their first-team squad. In his youth, he had held an ambition to play as a right-winger for the club.
  7. In October 2013, he had launched a book titled Mo Farah, Twin Ambitions: My Autobiography.
  8. In 2016, he had become just the 2nd athlete to have won the ‘Gold’ medal in both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m events at successive Summer Olympics. Lasse Virén of Finland was the first to achieve this feat, in 1976. Mo had completed this ‘distance double’ at the World Athletics Championships as well, in 2015.
  9. In November 2020, it was announced that he would be participating in the 20th series of the popular survival reality TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here. He was the 8th elimination in a pool of 12 celebrities. It was the first time in the show’s history that the filming was not done in Australia. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the series was filmed at Gwrych Castle in Abergele, Wales.
