More than 56,000 pounds of stuffed sandwiches recalled over plastic contamination fears
More than 56,000 pounds of stuffed sandwiches are being recalled over plastic contamination fears.
J & J Snack Foods Handhelds Corp, based in North Carolina, issued the recall after two customers found ‘semi-transparent plastic’, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in a release on Friday.
Health officials say no one has reported any ‘adverse reactions’ yet from consuming the sandwiches.
The products were shipped to stores nationwide, but it’s unclear which states are affected by the recall.
J & J Snack Foods Handhelds Corp is recalling 56,578 pounds of pepperoni pizza and ham & cheese stuffed sandwiches due to a possible plastic contamination
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says J & J Snack Foods received the complaints on April 3.
Subject to recall are nine-ounce carton packages containing two sandwiches each of Bremer Classic Pepperoni Pizza Hot Stuffed Sandwiches or Bremer Classic Ham & Cheese Hot Stuffed Sandwiches.
They were produced and packaged on February 19 and February 20 of this year and then shipped to grocery stores across the country, including Aldi.
Affected sandwiches have a best-if-used-by date of August 12, 2020 and August 13, 2020.
The packages have the establishment number EST. 27231 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
It remains unclear how the plastic got into the stuffed sandwiches and the type of plastic that was found.
FSIS classified the recall as Class I meaning ‘a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death’.
Customers are urged not to consume the products and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.
Anyone with questions has been asked to call the company’s customer relations coordinator Kristyn Castellante at (856) 532-6611.
This is the latest in a series of recalls of food products due to plastic contamination.
Just yesterday, Michigan-based company JBS Plainwell recalled more than 43,000 pounds of ground beef products after consumers found ‘green hard plastic’.
And last week, Tyson Foods recalled more than 20,000 pounds of frozen beef patties after two customers found bits of ‘soft purple plastic’.
