Marks and Spencer is launching a delivery service to help those who are isolated during the coronavirus outbreak.

The upmarket grocer is will launch on the food delivery app – which is primarily used by restaurants – from today.

Their full range won’t be available, instead a selected range of approximately 60 M&S products which can be delivered straight to people’s homes within 30 minutes.

The new partnership will be run through 120 M&S franchise stores located at BP petrol stations across the UK.

Items available will include milk, bread and juices, as well as easy meal options such as pizza and ready-prepared meals.

Customer favourites including the M&S 100 per cent orange juice, the 12′ Stone Baked Cheese & Tomato Pizza, their 4 Pint Semi Skimmed Milk, the Super Seed Loaf 800g, and their Chilli & Rice Meal will be available.

To help those in isolation and in need of essential household items, Deliveroo will also roll-out ‘Essentials by Deliveroo’, a new range of convenience items to ensure people who are at home, especially the elderly and vulnerable, can receive the items they increasingly need.

‘Essentials by Deliveroo’ will include cereal, pasta, rice, sweets and biscuits, soft drinks and juices, tinned and canned goods.

This went live in Cambridge on Wednesday and will be rolled-out across Reading, Brighton, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds and London over the next two weeks.

It will also be introduced internationally in the UAE, France, Spain and Australia.

Deliveroo and Co-op also recently announced a new nationwide partnership. There are now nearly 400 Co-op stores on Deliveroo across the UK, meaning families at home can access household items 7 days a week in under 30 minutes.

Will Shu, founder and CEO of Deliveroo, said: ‘At Deliveroo, we want to do everything possible to help people get the food they want and need during this worrying period. We hope we can play a role in supporting people who have to isolate to get the food they need whether that’s household items or restaurant food.’

M&S have never before had an online delivery service but are due to deliver their full range through Ocado from September.

Last year, Ocado announced it had cut ties with Waitrose after 19 years – to sign with the middle-class favourite’s arch-rivals Marks & Spencer.

Ocado, which stocks its own-brand goods as well as Waitrose’s, struck a £1.5billion deal with M&S.

The major shake-up of the grocery market will take effect next year, when Ocado’s deal with Waitrose expires.

It comes as Boris Johnson plunged the UK into coronavirus lockdown that could last months – ordering the immediate closure of all shops selling non-essential goods, as well as playgrounds and churches as he told Britons to ‘stay at home’.

Gatherings of more than two people will be banned in the most dramatic curbs ever seen in Britain in peacetime, as the government goes all out to stop the spread of the killer disease.

In a grim address to the nation from Downing Street, Mr Johnson said family reunions, weddings, baptisms and other social events must be cancelled to stop the NHS collapsing under the strain – although funerals can go ahead.
