Mukesh Kumar Facts

  1. He was born and brought up in the northern Indian state of Bihar but moved to Kolkata, the capital of the neighboring state of West Bengal, in 2012, to help his father’s taxi business which was suffering losses.
  2. Another reason behind the move was that his cricket career was not taking off in Bihar and opportunities for further cricketing growth in that state were also quite limited because Bihar was not affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (the governing body for cricket in the country) at that time.
  3. Although he was very passionate about pursuing a career in cricket, his father was not too keen on the idea. Mukesh had to appear in the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force, India’s largest central armed police force) entrance exam thrice in the mid-2010s because his father wanted him to get a government job.
  4. His life turned around for good in 2014 when he impressed the selectors and coaches who were overseeing the open trials that had been arranged by the Cricket Association of Bengal (the governing body for cricket in the Indian state of West Bengal) for its ambitious cricketing talent development project titled ‘Vision 2020’.
  5. Mukesh, by virtue of being a senior-level domestic cricketer, later got a job at the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a constitutional authority that is empowered to audit all receipts and expenditures of the Government of India, the state governments in India, and those autonomous bodies/corporations that are substantially financed by the Government of India.
  6. Although his senior-level domestic cricket career with Bengal started in 2015, he came into the spotlight only in March 2020 when he was one of the stars of Bengal’s bowling attack that lifted the team to their first Ranji Trophy (the premier domestic cricket competition in India) final since the 2006-07 season.
  7. For the 2022 season of the IPL (Indian Premier League), he served as a net bowler for the Delhi Capitals.
  8. In August 2022, he was selected in the representative ‘India A’ squad for the first time in his career. The squad was picked for a 3-match unofficial bilateral home 4-day test series against ‘New Zealand A’ that was to be played in September 2022. Mukesh impressed everyone by picking up 9 wickets in the series (which ‘India A’ won by a 1-0 margin) including a 5-wicket haul on the very first day of the series.
  9. In early October 2022, he was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his sensational spell of 4/23 in the first innings of the Irani Trophy (an annual 5-day match that pits the Ranji Trophy champions of the previous season against a ‘Rest of India’ squad). His spell was instrumental in ‘Rest of India’ bundling out Saurashtra for just 98 runs in the first innings of the match. Although Saurashtra fought back hard in the rest of the match, they could never really recover from the 1st-day collapse as the ‘Rest of India’ team romped to victory by a margin of 8 wickets, inside 4 days.
  10. The story of how this match was played in October 2022 is also quite interesting. Saurashtra won the 2019-20 season of the Ranji Trophy in March 2020; their first-ever title triumph after having lost the final thrice before (2012-13, 2015-16, and 2018-19). In an ideal world, Saurashtra would have played their Irani Trophy match in February or March of 2021 as the match, since 2013, has been held at the end of the following season of Indian domestic cricket.
  11. However, the COVID-19 pandemic meant that the entire 2020-21 season of domestic cricket in India was canceled. Even the following season (2021-22) was heavily curtailed and included a highly compressed version of the Ranji Trophy which was won by Madhya Pradesh; their first-ever Ranji Trophy title.
  12. The season did not have an Irani Trophy match, though. This created confusion regarding the Irani Trophy for the 2022-23 season which was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India as the first full season of domestic cricket in India since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  13. Both Saurashtra and Madhya Pradesh (both 1st-time Ranji Trophy winners) were now laying claim to a place in the prestigious Irani Trophy in the 2022-23 season and to resolve the conflict, it was announced that the season would see the Irani Trophy played twice – at the start of the season (October 2022) with Saurashtra hosting a ‘Rest of India’ squad at their home venue of Rajkot, Gujarat; and at the end of the season (March 2023) with Madhya Pradesh hosting a ‘Rest of India’ squad at their home venue of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
  14. This entire situation proved to be a godsend for Mukesh. His performances against ‘New Zealand A’ in September 2022 had already impressed the Indian senior national team’s selectors. His 4/23 on the first day (October 1, 2022) of the aforementioned Irani Trophy match against Saurashtra brought him further recognition and accolades.
  15. The very next day (October 2, 2022), he was included in an Indian senior national squad for the first time in his career; for an upcoming 3-match home bilateral ODI series against South Africa. The selectors were forced to pick a second or even third-string squad because the first-choice Indian senior national squad had to depart for Australia to get acclimated to the conditions there before the 2022 edition of the ICC (International Cricket Council) World T20 that was slated to kick off in the middle of October 2022. Interestingly, Mukesh got to know about this selection only when he was added to the Indian team’s official WhatsApp group.
