Nathan Ellis Facts
- Nathan made his T20I (and international) debut on August 6, 2021, in the 3rd match of a 5-match away bilateral series against Bangladesh. On the last 3 balls of Bangladesh’s innings, Nathan recorded a hat-trick (the feat of dismissing 3 batters off 3 successive legal deliveries).
- This made him the first cricketer ever to take a hat-trick on his T20I debut. Hat-tricks are rare occurrences in any format of cricket and even more so in the T20I format. Nathan’s hat-trick was just the 17th such occasion (and only the 5th in a losing cause) in the 1,216 T20I matches that had been played until then (including that match).
- He also became just the 3rd Australian cricketer to have achieved a hat-trick in the T20I format. Brett Lee (September 2007) and Ashton Agar (February 2020) had previously achieved this feat. However, both those hat-tricks had been in a winning cause. Brett’s hat-trick, also against Bangladesh, was the first ever hat-trick recorded in a T20I match.
- As mentioned earlier, Australia lost the match in which Nathan took his hat-trick which meant that Australia conceded the 5-match series to Bangladesh by a 3-0 margin. This was Bangladesh’s first-ever series win in any format against Australia. This tour of Bangladesh was Australia’s first in the country since 2017 and the 5-match series was the first bilateral T20I series between the two teams. Interestingly, the series was not shown live in Australia due to a lack of a deal with broadcasters. This was the first time since Australia’s tour of Pakistan in 1994 that an overseas tour was not shown on Australian television.
- Later in August 2021, Nathan was named as one of the 3 players who would serve as injury cover for Australia’s squad that would participate in the 2021 edition of the ICC (International Cricket Council) World T20.
- He is mighty afraid of snakes.
