A registered sex offender who threatened to ‘ruin’ a teacher with false rape claims in a £600 blackmail plot has been jailed for two years.

Brandon Foskett texted the man he would tell his school and the police that he had raped two former students unless he handed over cash.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 24-year-old and his target were strangers to each other but Foskett found out his personal information through the removal work he was doing at the time.

Foskett, who had wanted money for drugs and alcohol, used his own phone and bank account to carry out the con and was quickly found out.

While being monitored for a Risk of Sexual Harm Order, he also fled 200 miles away from Newcastle to work as a porter at a tourist hotel in Scotland last year.

He was then released after serving his 10-month sentence on remand earlier this year.

Foskestt has now been jailed for two years over this latest offence after pleading guilty to blackmail.

Prosecutor Barry Robson told the court: ‘The complainant received a message, a text message, which read he would be putting in a report to the education establishment and also Northumbria Police that you raped two females and the two females would be writing a statement and going to court.’

Foskett had warned in one message: ‘Think you should get out of this one by sending £600 to my details below. Don’t ask questions, do it or I will ruin you. Don’t test me lad, I know who you are and I have a lot to take you down.’

The court heard a second message followed, which contained account details.

Mr Robson added: ‘The complainant initially tried to laugh the messages off but became concerned this person knew personal details about him and had mentioned the educational establishment where he used to work.’

The court heard the victim contacted the police and the number used was traced to Foskett, who had given it as his contact for his notification requirements for the Sex Offenders Register.

The account details given during the blackmail matched a bank card Foskett was carrying.

The court also heard Foskett, of Park Road, Newcastle, was given a prison sentence earlier this year for working as a porter at a tourist hotel in Scotland without informing the authorities that he had a job or had left his home area.

Judge Penny Moreland has now sentenced him to two years behind bars with a five year restraining order to protect the victim.

She told Foskett: ‘Blackmail is a particularly nasty offence. During the course of your work as a removal man you learned something of the person who was to become your victim and in particular you learned he taught at a particular educational establishment.

‘When you needed money for drugs and alcohol you texted that person. You threatened that two false allegations of rape would be made against him by people he had taught at that educational establishment.

‘I accept the blackmail was short lived and unsophisticated, your identity was easily found but I regard the nature of the menaces, that is, threats to make false allegations of rape against someone who works in an educational establishment, was particularly serious, given the potential damage to that person’s character and reputation, professional and private life.’

Jamie Adams, defending, said Foskett was traced ‘easily’ by the police and has a series of problems including ADHD, Asperger’s and dyslexia.

Mr Adams added: ‘He was drinking and taking drugs and not thinking of the consequences of what he had been doing.’
