THE son of the late Ryan O’Neal has spoken out against the Emmys for snubbing his father during their In Memoriam segment.
Patrick O’Neal shared his anger after learning his father, who died in December, was left out of the segment at Monday’s big ceremony.
“Wasn’t watching #Emmys, but someone let me know they left my dad out of the ‘in memoriam,'” Patrick wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Kind of wish I didn’t know right now but I would’ve found out.”
He continued, “Sad and mad is a paralyzing combo.”
Every year, the Emmys dedicate a portion of the show to notable figures in television who died in the previous 12 months.
This year, Charlie Puth performed the theme song from the popular sitcom Friends during the in-memoriam segment at the 75th edition of the awards show – an ode to Matthew Perry, who died in October 2023.
Fans were quick to share their disappointment about Ryan, 82, being snubbed.
“Disgraceful. He will always be a legend. What a miss by #EmmyAwards,” one fan wrote on X.
“Shows, once again, the declining value of Hollywood,” another person raged.
“Your dad certainly deserved it, bit [sic] he lived in the best time of Hollywood and he remembers.”
And a third person wrote, “I’m so sorry, Patrick. I noticed right away. We will remember and honor him.”
STAR MOURNED
Ryan was best known for playing Rodney Harrington on the ABC nighttime soap opera Peyton Place.
As an Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee, he was featured in films like Love Story, Paper Moon, Barry Lyndon, and The Driver.
In 2001, he was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia and later with Stage 2 prostate cancer in 2012.
Ryan is survived by his four children, Tatum, Griffin, Redmond, and Patrick – all of whom dabbled in the entertainment industry.
He married twice; his first marriage was to actress Joanna Moore in 1963, with whom he had Tatum and Griffin.
His second marriage was to his Peyton Place co-star Leigh Taylor-Young, with whom he had Patrick.
The couple was married for four years before they ultimately divorced in 1971.
His most famous romance was with iconic actress Farrah Fawcett, with whom he had an on-and-off relationship that stretched from 1979 to 1997.
In 1985, Fawcett gave birth to Ryan’s fourth child, Redmond.
The two rekindled their romance 12 years later in 2009, shortly before Fawcett died from cancer at age 62.
In 2012, the actor told Reuters, “Although I was shocked and stunned by the news, I feel fortunate that it was detected early and according to my extraordinary team of doctors the prognosis is positive for a full recovery.
“I am deeply grateful for the support of my friends and family during this time, and I urge everyone to get regular check-ups, as early detection is the best defense against this horrible disease that has afflicted so many,” he added.
2024 EMMY AWARDS
The Emmys was originally supposed to air last September but was postponed due to the writers and actors strikes.
Months later, stars hit the silver carpet to show off their outfits before taking their seats for the big ceremony.
Kourtney Kardashian and her husband, Travis Barker, turned heads as they shared a passionate kiss for the cameras outside the venue.
Travis then helped kick off the star-studded event in style as he joined host Anthony Anderson on stage.
The Bear cast took home plenty of awards, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach shocked the crowd when he planted a passionate kiss on producer Matty Matheson during their Emmys speech.
At the beginning of the night, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri, 28, won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
When her name was announced, she seemed completely taken aback and flustered.
And as Carson Daly stood up to give her a standing ovation, Ayo stood up and realized she was holding her purse and phone in her lap.
In a frantic moment, she pushed her belongings into The Voice host’s hands before she made her way to the stage.
Another notable moment came when Paul Walter Hauser took the stage and was seen chewing during his speech.
He was later photographed barefoot while holding his award for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Larry Hall in Black Bird.
Emmys viewers were delighted to see Joan Collins, 90, take the stage.
She showed off her incredible figure as she stood next to Taraji P. Henson, 53, and announced the winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The big winners of the night were Succession and The Bear, which each received six awards, while Beef earned five trophies.
