An influencer whose journey to make it as a singer was documented on reality show Byron Baes has described her time on the Netflix series as ‘absolute torture’.

Sarah St James, whose real name is Sarah Tangye, revealed she turned to alcohol to cope with her anxiety while filming for hours on end, and would often drink gin straight from the bottle.

The first season of Byron Baes followed the Gold Coast-based musician as she moved to Byron Bay to launch her career, but she said she found the other cast members ‘insanely judgmental’.

‘I like to deal with things head on and not being able to and losing that control was a catalyst for a lot of my anxiety,’ she told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘I had to suck it up. I was drinking far too much while filming. I think we shot for 12 weeks and 80 per cent of that time I was drinking too much.’

She said that during one shoot she was sitting with co-star Alex Reid for two hours and wasn’t able to leave.

‘I brought a bottle of gin and was drinking it from my bag… they [producers] ended up confiscating it off me,’ she said.

Sarah admitted her anxiety got so bad she almost suffered a ‘mental breakdown’ because ‘filming became unbearable’ and was ‘a mind f**k’.

She said that after filming ended, she started going back to the gym, stopped boozing and adopted healthier habits, which ‘helped massively’.

The Queenslander added that she has no desire to return to the coastal NSW town or film a second season of Byron Baes, but would be willing to do reality TV again.

‘People from Byron pretending they’re all welcoming and spiritual and that it’s this beautiful, easy breezy town, but then in the same breath will be insanely judgmental… some of the most judgmental people that I have ever met,’ she said.

Despite these harsh words, Sarah said she doesn’t have any beef with the majority of the cast, including her ex Nathan Favro.

Sarah added that people from the Gold Coast may be cheesy but at least they are ‘unapologetically themselves’.
