Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has come under fire from diners at one of his restaurants who blasted his towering burger as “pompous c**p” and “impossible” to tackle.

Culinary star Tom, famed for his TV appearances on MasterChef and Saturday Kitchen, is serving up the £19.50 gourmet burger at his posh venue, The Coach, in Marlow. His ambitious stack features soy and sesame chicken, smoked cheese, and dill pickle, and stands sky-high on the plate at eight inches (20cm).

Customers of the upmarket Buckinghamshire eatery have taken to social media to vent their frustrations, with one fuming: “I’ve always said if the burger is impossible to eat as a burger and you have to take it apart to eat then you cannot call it a burger.”

Another critic weighed in: “Not for me. Sure individually components are amazing but it’s not a burger if not handheld.” A third person agreed: “A burger that is physically impossible to eat like a burger. Food like this is getting beyond stupid these days isn’t it?”

As a fourth diner dismissed the creation as “pompous c**p”, the conversation inevitably turned to the burger’s hefty cost. “And that will be £500 please,” joked one person in response to a video of the burger on Instagram.

Kerridge, 51, recently opened up about his creation, citing inspiration from the exaggeratedly tall burgers devoured by Scooby Doo in the classic cartoons.

He challenged his followers: “Check out the famous burger from The Coach in Marlow. The idea behind this was to mimic the Scooby Doo Burger of being ridiculously tall. Do you think we nailed it?”

The culinary maestro behind nine UK restaurants and owner of three Michelin stars, shared his whimsical approach: “The idea was to make it fun, exciting, ridiculous, tasty, packed full of flavour. Layer, upon layer, upon layer, as it goes up and up. It’s just a childhood memory of thinking of Scooby Doo when he has solved the crime.”

Earlier this year, Kerridge cranked up the price of his upscale fish finger sandwich at his Harrods eatery from £18 to a whopping £27, as What’s The Jam reported.

Further causing an uproar, in October last year, he chucked a lofty price tag of £37 for traditional fish and chips at the same prestigious spot.
