Career

Antonio made his professional debut in boxing at the age of eight in 1997. At the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia, he made his debut with a second-round knockout. Antonio saw the colors of success during his early career, when he won 16 fights, 14 by knockout. In Las Vegas in 2000, he defeated Ernest Mateen by knockout. In the same year, Antonio suffered his first defeat against Eric Harding in Mississippi.

Antonio defeated Reggie Johnson, the two-time weight world champion, two years later. After that, Antonio defended his WBC and IBF light-heavyweight titles against Montel Griffin. Antonio received his first world title here. Roy Jones Jr., the boxing king, was defeated by Antonio Tarver in a thrilling fight in 2003. But that was not the end of the story. In 2004, a rematch was scheduled. When Antonio fought Roy and won, he gained massive popularity and instant celebrity in this town.

He was even approached about appearing on popular magazine covers such as Ring and KO. At this point, Antonio became the co-host (for one telecast) of ESPN’s Friday Night Finals.

Antonio had a bad year in 2004 when the WBC stripped him of his world title because he chose to fight Glenn Johnson rather than the WBC’s mandatory challenger. The WBA had even stripped him of his Super Champion title.

This incident did not diminish Antonio’s or Glen Johnson’s fame, as it was greatly appreciated that the two boxers chose to fight each other rather than succumb to the pressures of boxing sanctioning bodies. Antonio, on the other hand, did not win his fight against Glenn Johnson. Antonio won his third fight against Roy Jones Jr. Kim in 2005 in Florida.

The following year, Antonio faced Bernard Hopkins for the world middleweight championship. However, it went against Antonio Tarver, and he suffered a massive defeat. Antonio then decided to stay out of the ring for nearly a year. He returned to the ring in 2007 and defeated Elvir Muriqi. He kept fighting Danny Santiago until he regained the IBF title by defeating Clinton Woods. In addition to his professional boxing career, he played heavyweight champion Mason Dixon in the film Rocky Balboa.
