MSNBC host and former Nightly News host and managing editor Brian Williams will leave NBC at the end of the year to “spend time with his family,” MSNBC President Rashida Jones said Tuesday.

In his farewell to colleagues, the veteran journalist took stock of some of his achievements: “28 years, 38 countries, 8 Olympic Games, 7 presidential elections, half a dozen presidents, some wars and an SNL.

“Good friends were in great numbers on NBC. I was fortunate that everyone I worked with made me better at my job, “wrote the 62-year-old Williams.


In an email, Jones said Willams’ tenure was characterized by publishing “countless” important stories and attracting top journalists to his shows.

In 2015, while hosting Nightly News, Williams was suspended by the network for six months after telling an inaccurate story about his helicopter being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

He admitted on air that he “made a mistake remembering the events of 12 years ago.”


After the suspension, Williams moved to MSNBC, where he later released “The 11th Hour.”

Early life

Born May 5, 1959, in Ridgewood, New Jersey,Williams grew up in a “bustling” Catholic household of mostly Irish descent. He is the son of Dorothy May (née Pampel) and Gordon Lewis Williams, who was executive vice president of the National Association of Retailers, in New York.his mother was an amateur theater actress. Williams is the youngest of four siblings.

He lived in Elmira, New York, for nine years before moving to Middletown Township, New Jersey when he was in high school.

Williams graduated from Mater Dei High School, a Roman Catholic high school in the New Monmouth section of Middletown.While in high school, he was a volunteer firefighter for three years with the Middletown Township Fire Department. Also while in high school, he was the editorial editor of the school newspaper. He suffered an accident during a soccer game that left him with a crooked nose. His first job was as a busboy at the Perkins Pancake House.

Career

Early broadcast career

Williams first worked in broadcasting in 1981 at KOAM-TV in Pittsburg, Kansas. The following year he covered news in the Washington, D.C. area on the then independent station WTTG, then worked in Philadelphia for WCAU, then owned and operated by CBS.  Starting in 1987 he broadcast in New York City on WCBS.

Williams joined NBC News in 1993, where he directed the national Weekend Nightly News and was chief White House correspondent.In the summer of 1996 he began working as the host and managing editor of The News with Brian Williams, broadcast on MSNBC and CNBC.Williams also served as the lead alternate host on The NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, and his weekend host.

Brian Williams will be leaving The 11th Hour, the show he hosts on MSNBC, at the end of the year.

“My comeback years later was my choice, as was the release of ‘The 11th Hour’ that I am as proud of as the decade I spent hosting Nightly News,” Williams said in his statement. “I wanted it to be called ‘The 11th Hour’ (it was late in the 2016 campaign), and I wanted it to air at 11pm ET.

“I ask everyone in our loyal audience to stay true. Hour 11 will remain in good hands, produced by the best cable news team.”

Williams didn’t announce plans for the future, but said he had a lot of things that he hoped to do and hoped he would “show up again somewhere.”

Williams married Jane Gillan Stoddard, at First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan, Connecticut, on June 7, 1986.They currently live in New Canaan. Williams also maintains a beach house in Bay Head, New Jersey and a pied-à-terre in Midtown Manhattan.

Actress Allison Williams is his daughter. Williams’ son, Doug, is the evening host for Geico SportsNite on SportsNet New York, a regional sports channel available in the New York metropolitan area. The Doug Williams show occasionally airs at the same time as his father’s MSNBC show.

Williams was a member of the board of directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation from September 2006 until he resigned in the wake of the scandal over his comments on the Iraq war.
