Who is David Venables ?
A retired farmer who murdered his wife before hiding her remains in a septic tank has been jailed for life.
Brenda Venables disappeared from the house she shared with her husband David de Ella in Kempsey, Worcestershire, in 1982.
Charged
Her remains were found inside the tank at the couple’s farm in 2019 and Venables was charged with her murder.
During her trial it was revealed that Venables, now 89, killed his wife after rekindling a long-term relationship.
On Wednesday at Worcester Crown Court, High Court Judge Mrs Justice Tipples ruled that she must be a minimum of 18 years old.
The 40-year mystery of the missing farmer’s wife
The pensioner had taken advantage of his wife’s depression to create a “carefully thought out story” that she had left home in the middle of the night, apparently to take her own life, the judge told him.Mrs. Venables had a “cheerful and kind nature,” her family said.
Jurors heard how Venables seemed emotionless when her wife of 22 years disappeared and she continued to be emotionless throughout the trial.
Investigation
A police investigation after Ms. Venables was reported missing on May 4, 1982 failed to find any trace of her.
Her decomposing remains were not discovered until July 2019, five years after Venables moved out of the Quaking House Farm, where they had lived together.
The new owners wanted the tank checked out and an engineer discovered remnants of her clothing, a lock of hair and a human skull.

After tests determined that the remains were those of Mrs. Venables, her husband was charged with her murder.
During his trial, details of his double life were revealed as prosecutors recounted how he had been in a long-term, on-and-off relationship with his mother’s caregiver, Lorraine Styles, since around 1967.
Despite his death in 2017, a statement Ms Styles had given to police in 1984 was read in court describing him as “pretty cool” over the disappearance of his wife.
Jurors heard that the evidence showed that he had used a manhole cover to put weight on his wife’s body.
The judge also rejected defense claims that the murder had been carried out on the spur of the moment, telling Venables that the entire process of disposing of the body in the septic tank and then leaving no trace must have required a considerable planning.
“Her complete lack of respect for Brenda is obvious from her decision to dispose of her body in the septic tank,” Mrs. Justice Tipples told him.
“The fact that that’s what you did to her body is disgusting and repulsive.”
Addressing the motive for the murder, she said: “I’m sure you killed Brenda Venables to get her out of your life and out of the complications she could have presented you with in any divorce proceedings.”
“There is no doubt that there is an element of greed and selfishness.”
