Stanton served in the Phoenix City Council for the 6th district from 2000 to 2009 after being elected in 2000, 2001, and 2005. Following the November 2011 mayoral election, Stanton expressed his support for eliminating the city’s food tax in an interview. Additionally, he was in favor of changes to public pension plans, such as increased employee contributions to retirement funds and a longer waiting period before receiving benefits.
Due to predictions that eliminating the levy would result in the layoffs of approximately 99 police officers and 300 other city employees, Stanton decided against removing the food tax in March 2013. By June 2022, Stanton had consistently cast votes that supported Joe Biden’s positions. Stanton spoke against the Supreme Court’s decision to repeal Roe v. Wade in 2022, calling it “a horrible, dark day for our society” and asserting that they had a “extreme, ideological goal.”
