Mr Gration, the former presenter of the BBC Yorkshire news program Look North, joined the corporation in 1978 and Look North in 1982, leaving the role in 2020.

He received an MBE in 2019 and won two Royal Television Society awards for sports documentaries. He also won the award for best RTS host twice.

“He loved the news, sports, his colleagues and fundraising for Children in Need and Comic Relief. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends and everyone at the BBC with whom she worked.”

He was made an MBE by broadcasting services in 2013. Speaking after it was announced he would be leaving the BBC in 2020, Gration said: “I’ve interviewed every prime minister since Margaret Thatcher, covered every big Look North story, even at the cost of of my vacation, and nothing would have changed.

I have always lived the story. Horrendous events like the devastating news of Jo Cox’s death, the disastrous floods of recent times, the Bradford, Hillsborough riots have always affected me. They were always an assault on my county.

“Highlights include raising over £800,000 on a tandem, pushing a sofa and being strapped into Paul – three challenges my body will never forget.”

In 2019, Gration became a father again at the age of 68, when his wife, Helen, gave birth to her sixth child.
