Who is Haydn Griffiths ?

The search for a man who went missing in Mersey on the hottest day in UK history has been called off.

Haydn Griffiths, 23, was last seen swimming with a friend in New Brighton, Merseyside, around 10:30 p.m. m. on Tuesday, July 19.


She was swimming towards the nearby wind turbines when she disappeared from sight and did not resurface.

The Coast Guard and lifeboat volunteers launched a huge search, but it was called off around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.


Merseyside Police continue to investigate Haydn’s disappearance.

Police and rescue services searched the water where Haydn disappeared on Tuesday and Wednesday (July 19 and 20) before finally having to call off the search.

Haydn had been trying to swim to the New Brighton Wind Farm when he disappeared from sight.

Haydn’s family traveled to Merseyside to continue searching for him. His older sister, Megan Griffiths, flew to Heathrow to help search for him.

She told the Liverpool Echo that she believes her brother is still “out there and fighting.”

Megan said: ‘Maybe he washed up on a remote beach and is too injured to find help? He may still be out at sea, hanging from a buoy.

Haydn is so strong. The RNLI coast guard has been amazing and the search party has been amazing.

“This is the most important quest in the entire world as my amazing little brother is out there. He is the strongest human being I have ever met and I know he is fighting out there.

She added: ‘Time is precious and I hope we can find it as soon as possible. Anyone, everyone, please, if you are near Wallasey or the surrounding areas, help with the search.

‘If the local yacht clubs can help, please help. I have felt completely powerless.

Police released a description of Haydn and said he was last seen wearing dark-colored swim shorts.

Haydn is white, 6 feet 1 inches tall, athletic, with short blonde hair and blue eyes.

At least 13 people since the heatwave began on July 9, with Tuesday being Britain’s hottest day on record as temperatures peaked above 40 degrees for the first time.

Several drowned during the heatwave: a 14-year-old boy drowned in Richmond after getting into trouble in the Thames, while a man in his 20s died at Cotswold Water Park, Ashton Keynes.

A 70-year-old man also drowned on the Isle of Wight despite rescue services trying to revive him for 40 minutes. At least five people died during the heat wave on Monday alone.

A 21-year-old man is still missing in Clacton after five others were pulled from the water. The search for him was called off Wednesday.

Five others also had to be rescued from the water off Clacton Pier after getting into trouble and being taken to hospital.

Authorities said they regretted having to cancel the search for 23-year-old Haydn Griffiths on Merseyside.

Merseyside Police said: ‘Tonight, Wednesday 20th July, we are continuing to carry out investigations following reports that a 23-year-old man, Haydn Griffiths, disappeared while swimming in the River Mersey off New Brighton at around 10.30am. pm last night. (Tuesday).

‘Haydn was last seen in the water at Derby Pool, New Brighton, wearing dark colored swimming shorts trying to swim towards windmills in the area.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency carried out an extensive search of the river last night and today, but Haydn was not found and the search has now been called off.

After calling off the search, a spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “We have carried out a thorough search of the area and unfortunately the missing person has not been found.” The search is now being suspended.

“Our thoughts and those of all our Coast Guard colleagues are with the family and friends of the missing man.”

An RNLI spokesman told the Liverpool Echo: ‘The Hoylake Shannon-class RNLI lifeboat was relaunched this afternoon to continue the search for the missing swimmer.

‘The volunteer crew was searched at 2:33 p.m. and the lifeboat searched an area around the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm.

The Caernarfon-based coast guard helicopter was also ordered. Both assets have now been retired.’
