Tsarnaev was convicted in 2015 of the deaths of Lingzi Lu, a 23-year-old Chinese graduate student at Boston University; Krystle Campbell, a 29-year-old restaurant manager from Medford, Massachusetts; and Martin Richard, 8, of Boston.
The attack left 255 injured and his older brother, Tamerlan, also shot and killed MIT police officer Sean Collier. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police after the bombing.
Defense attorneys had argued that Tsarnaev was dominated by his violent older brother, a suspect in a 2011 triple homicide case in Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Today reported.
Tamerlan was a boxer who became radicalized in the early 2000s, sharing YouTube playlists calling for violent Islamic terrorism and allegedly pressured his younger brother to share his views and participate in the attack. .
