Who is Neville Meikle ?

A man killed while changing a tire on a motorway exit ramp was a former speed-skating champion representing Australia.

Neville Meikle, 59, was remembered as a larrikin and larger-than-life character after his death on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday.


‘Nifty’, as his friends knew him, was changing a tire on his ute on the side of Sunshine Motorway under the Bruce Highway overpass when he was hit by a car.

The East Brisbane man was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he later died from serious chest injuries.


Meikle’s heartbroken sister, Linda, led the rush of tributes online.

‘I will miss you as you were definitely one of a kind. Until we meet again dear brother,’ she wrote.

Meikle represented Australia at the 1980-81 world speed skating championships and was heavily involved in the Brisbane roller skating scene in the 1970s and 1980s.


‘We have lost a legend in speed skating. he was a guy who told you from the beginning what he was thinking, but he was the first to say great job. he taught me a lot, one of the funniest guys,” Stephen Haylock posted.

‘Neville was always there for us and he always had our backs. Sadly, great characters like Neville are now few and far between.

Eddie Karayan added: “As an international roller speed skater, his contribution to our global sport was very effective.”

Fellow skating enthusiasts paid tribute to an ‘absolute character’.
