Steve Gallant Biography
Who is Steve Gallant ?
A convicted killer who used a narwhal tusk to help bring down the London Bridge terrorist has spoken about the attack as well as his ‘deep regret’ for a murder that saw him locked up for life.
Steve Gallant, 43, chased and helped pin down jihadist knifeman Usman Khan, 28, during the 2019 terror incident.
The terrorist killed graduates Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones at the event in Fishmonger’s Hall before running out onto London Bridge.
Gallant was jailed for 17 years in 2005 for the murder of Barrie Jackson in Hull and was attending a rehabilitation event when fellow participant Khan launched his attack.
Gallant spoke today for the first time about the terror attack. ‘People can change,’ I told Channel 4.
‘You can do something bad and do something good. I hope that it inspired other prisoners. ‘
He added: ‘I deeply regret the fact that I have taken someone’s life.
‘And I understand and accept, no one has the right to take someone’s life or use violence.
“The shock of being sent to prison and seeing everyone devastated had a profound effect on me early in my sentence.
“That was what made me make the firm decision to change, educate myself and not use violence again.”
Prison can work. But I think it has to come from within if you don’t want to change, nothing can change you. ‘
He added: ‘Prison can work. But I think it has to come from within if you don’t want to change, nothing can change you. ‘
In the interview broadcast at 7 pm on Channel 4 today, he said that Jack Merritt “was amazing.”
“It had such a profound effect on so many people in the prison system. So not only is it sad that he was killed in that way, in that terrible way, and of course Saskia Jones as well, but it positively affected the lives of so many people in the system.
‘The work I could have continued to do, it’s a shame that someone so powerful was taken from us at such a young age.
‘I’ve been to some dark, dark places, but if I can extract some of that, in a way that really says’ you don’t have to go the same way, you know, you can avoid it, I’ve been there, I’ve done that, just keep on my advice on this, avoid that. ” And if anyone can take advantage of that, then great. ‘
Murder
The convicted murderer also spoke about the moment when he confronted the terrorist.
He said: ‘He came up to me and opened his jacket and showed me what was an explosive belt tied around his waist, I think he wanted to scare me.
But he was in the middle of a murder spree. I couldn’t just walk away and for some reason.
Gallant was part of a gang that attacked firefighter Mr. Jackson after he was acquitted of the alleged attempted murder of a prostitute in Hull.
I assumed it was false. And then I looked next to me, and there was a guy next to me holding a narwhal tusk.
‘So I thought great. You know, I’ll use this to face Usman.

“ The idea was really for me to just occupy it while keeping busy until the police arrived.
He’s brandishing his knives trying to reach me, I keep enough distance just to stay safe and I managed to hit him again with the narwhal fang, but this time it broke on him.
He then he came running to me because now I am unarmed. So I backed off.
He headed for the front door. And then all of a sudden he made his way quickly, so now he’s outside, outside the building on London Bridge.
I followed him to the street.
‘I saw women walking towards him completely oblivious, so I yelled,’ come back, he’s a terrorist ‘and then others came out of the building and joined me.

There’s John Crilly with the fire extinguisher and Darryn Frost with another narwhal tusk. And then they chased Usman Khan as he ran towards London Bridge. So I did the same. ‘
Gallant received early release from his 17-year murder sentence, after using the narwhal tusk in an attempt to take down Fishmonger’s Hall jihadist Usman Khan during his deadly terrorist attack.
Gallant had been serving his sentence for the 2005 murder of firefighter Barrie Jackson.
Mr. Jackson had been enjoying a night out drinking at The Dolphin, on Greenwich Avenue, Hull, on the night of Sunday, April 24, 2005.
At 10:30 pm, before he could finish his drinks and return home, he was attacked and beaten so severely that the paramedics who tried to revive him could not find his mouth.
Mr. Jackson was doused with CS gas and beaten to the ground with a hammer by two men, including Gallant. The couple waited for Mr. Jackson outside the Dolphin pub after believing that he had attacked Gallant’s girlfriend.
After a citywide police hunt, Jackson’s killers were finally found.
The attack was considered premeditated and coordinated, as the men had been waiting for Jackson and continued to attack him despite his attempts to flee.
An autopsy revealed that all the bones in his face were broken.
Steve Gallant and Daniel Gilligan, both of East Hull, were eventually convicted of murder and ordered to spend at least 17 years behind bars.
Jackson’s former partner, Vicky Foster, previously said Gallant’s actions on London Bridge were not “proof enough” of his reform.
She said: ‘It’s a very strange thing for me and the kids to have to process.
“Every time this is on the news, it brings it all back to me and the kids and that’s obviously difficult. ‘
