A MAN who went 67 years without washing because he was worried it would make him sick has died at 94, after taking a shower.

Amou Haji was dubbed the “dirtiest man in the world” for his bathroom dodging ways.

Aside from an aversion to soap and water, the Iranian was healthy, even though he ate only raw porcupine and drank dirty puddle water from a rusty oil can.

He also liked to smoke animal dung from an old pipe, as well as four cigarettes at a time.

Earlier this year, neighbors convinced him to take a shower after telling him that washing up made it hard to make friends or find a girlfriend.

The Iranian news agency quotes a source as saying that “for the first time a few months ago, the villagers had taken him to the bathroom to wash him.”

Such was his commitment not to wash himself that he once jumped from a moving car in which men from the town had put him to take him to a river.

Amou also attracted the interest of scientists interested in studying what kinds of life forms might have lodged in his body.

But they were surprised to discover that he had not suffered from any bacteria or parasites apart from trichinosis, a bacteria that is produced by eating raw meat and causes a common infection.

Tests, including those for HIV and hepatitis, also came back negative.

Amou lived in a shack on the outskirts of Dejgah village, but was surprisingly well educated.

He discussed the pros and cons of the French and Russian revolutions with the visitors.

Amou knew current politicians but also complained that international publicity had made life difficult for him.

Although his neighbors respect him, he said people occasionally show up to make fun of him and even throw stones at him.

In 2013 a short documentary titled ‘The Strange Life of Amou Haji’ was made about his life.

With Haji’s death, the unofficial record for “World’s Dirtiest Man” could go to an Indian man.

Kailash ‘Kalau’ Singh, from a village outside the holy city of Varanasi, has not washed for more than 30 years, reports the Hindustan Times.

He rejects the water in favor of what he called a “bath of fire” in an attempt to help end “every problem facing the nation.”
