Who was Travis Cashmore ?
New details have emerged about the three men killed in a roadside ‘standoff’ in south-west Victoria on Friday, with one of the men identified as a notorious local criminal.
Alleged victims Kevin Knowles, 49, and one of his companions were found injured and run over by the side of a country road near Kirkstall on Friday morning.
Another body, believed to be that of 45-year-old Travis Cashmore, was later found at a property in Kirkstall.
Police investigators are treating the deaths as a double murder suicide.
Local media believe the killings were sparked by a long-running “neighbourly” dispute, with reports that tensions between Knowles and Cashmore had been “simmering”, according to the Herald Sun.
Knowles had built a tough reputation in the area with a feared penchant for violence and multiple prison terms behind him.
He was a known drug addict and police had previously acknowledged a history of domestic violence.
Knowles’ criminal record was presented during a 2020 coronal investigation, at which point it spanned 50 pages.
Knowles and his then-girlfriend were investigated in the death of a 57-year-old Warrnambool man in 2016.
Steven Johnston, a father of two from Warrnambool, was found bludgeoned to death in his blood-spattered home and Knowles’ then-girlfriend, Amanda Bourke, was the only known witness to the assault.
Knowles’ prison letters to Ms. Bourke were unearthed in a 2019 inquest into the death.
An anonymous triple 0 caller seven months after the murder claimed that Bourke had beaten Johnston to death with an elephant statue.

Ms. Bourke told family members that Knowles was pressuring her not to testify and not to be a “dog.”
She drowned on a beach west of Warrnambool while she was swimming with Knowles in January 2018.
Statements filed on the coroner’s finding in her death suggested that Ms. Bourke had relapsed into a “drug scene” lifestyle when she met Knowles in 2012.Emergency services were called to Kirkstall, near Warrnambool, at around 10:20am. m. Friday, where the men were found by the roadside with gunshot wounds before police later found Cashmore’s body.

The police remained vigilant about the incident during the initial stage of the investigations.

A witness who lives nearby told 9News that he heard at least two gunshots before a vehicle sped away.
“The exact circumstances surrounding the deaths have yet to be determined at this stage, however detectives are not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
