Since Eric Smith, 13, was charged with the murder of 4-year-old Derrick Robie, “48 Hours” has been following the case. Smith was tried as an adult and found guilty of murder in the second degree.
Derrick Robie Mom: Where is Doreen Robie Today?
Derrick’s Robie mom, Dorren Robie, is with his husband Dale Robbie in their homes at Savona, Steuben County. She told the true-crime show that now that her son’s killer is free, she is worried about the safety of her family.
She recalls letting her son, Derrick, go alone to summer camp for the first time on August 2, 1993, just a block from their house in the Steuben County community of Savona.

Doreen would regret allowing him to stroll alone for the rest of her life. It was not, however, a poor parenting judgment if what happened did not occur.
Derrick Robie Murderer: Eric Smith Biography Explored
Eric Smith, the murderer of Derrick Robie, was a red-haired, freckle-faced 13-year-old child who was bullied in 1993. Smith was convicted of second-degree murder in 1994 and was sentenced to nine years in prison.
He abducted Derrick Robie, four, and led him into the woods in Savona, New York, where he suffocated and bludgeoned him with rocks before sexually abusing him with a stick.
Despite the fact that Smith was eligible for release as early as November of last year, he was delayed until February due to the time it took to obtain housing.
