Evert, 67, disclosed the illness in a story published Friday on ESPN.com; she is an on-air broadcaster for ESPN.
She found out about the cancer last month and started chemotherapy treatments this week.
“I have lived a very enchanted life. Now I have some challenges ahead of me,” said Evert. “But I take comfort in knowing that the chemotherapy is to make sure the cancer doesn’t come back.”
Evert won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings, and was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1995.

“Be your own advocate. Learn about your family’s history. Be fully aware of your body, follow your gut and be aware of the changes,” Evert said in the ESPN story. “Don’t try to be a crusader and think this will pass.”
