Who is Stephen Waterson ?
The ‘arrogant’ son of a former Conservative minister jailed for more than seven years in 2019 for crushing his girlfriend’s three-year-old son to death with his car seat has been released from prison.
Stephen Waterson, 30, was returning home from shopping in south London when he inverted his power car seat over Alfie Lamb, who was sitting at his mother’s feet in the rear footwell.
Mother
The boy began to cry and choke, but his mother, Adrian Hoare, told him to shut up before Waterson moved the seat forward again. By the time the trio arrived at Waterson’s home in Croydon, south London, Alfie had collapsed and stopped breathing.
He died at St Thomas’s Hospital in south London due to catastrophic brain damage on February 4, 2018, three days after the disgusting incident.
Waterson was not due to be released until 2023 and remains on leave until 2025, having been jailed at the Old Bailey for involuntary manslaughter and perverting the course of justice by lying to police and intimidating witnesses.
But the child killer, who was 26 at the time of Alfie’s death, has now been released early after spending just over three years in jail.
Generally, a sentence of more than seven years means that the defendant must spend two-thirds of the time in jail before being released on license. But Waterson would have spent time in jail while he awaited trial, which could be taken into account when considering early release.
Family
Hoare was jailed for two years and nine months in May 2019. She was offered early release just five months later, but she had her license revoked and she was re-arrested in May 2020.

A source close to the family said they only received notification that Waterson was out after he was released. He has contacted the Ministry of Justice to comment on the reasons why he has been released early.
Waterson, the adopted son of former Conservative MP Nigel Waterson, whom police described as “arrogant, selfish and deeply unpleasant”, tried to avoid prosecution by repeatedly lying to and intimidating witnesses.
He denied involuntary manslaughter during a previous trial in which the jury was unable to reach a verdict, before pleading guilty on the first day of his new trial.
During sentencing, the judge at the Old Bailey, Justice Timothy Kerr, told Waterson that he was “manipulative, dishonest, deceitful, controlling, threatening and sometimes violent.”
Killed
At the conclusion of the court case, Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding said that Alfie died as a result of a “selfish and cruel act”.
He said: ‘It’s hard to imagine what kind of pain someone would go through when you get crushed like that. For a three-and-a-half-year-old to be crushed by something that strong and no one to help him, it’s a shocking way to die.
“Stephen Waterson has portrayed himself as a selfish and abhorrent individual who killed a three and a half year old boy and never stood up and said what happened and took responsibility for the actions he took that day.”
